Posting Summary:
The Master of Arts in Curriculum & Teaching and Professional Certification (ELEM & SEC) program in the Department of Curriculum & Teaching is looking to hire a Fieldwork Placement Coordinator. The Fieldwork Placement Coordinator works alongside the Program Manager and Faculty in the MA-Curriculum & Teaching Program to identify pre-K-12 classrooms and adult learning sites to support student observations.
Job Summary/Basic Function:
Students in the MA-CURR and MA-Professional Certification in Elementary and Secondary Education Programs are required to conduct 10-20 hours of observation in formal learning environments each fall semester to achieve the following goals:
- Support critical analysis skills taught in core courses
- Support the development of inquiry questions for master’s project topics
- Fulfill observation requirements for students seeking Elementary (K-5) or Secondary (7-12) Professional Certification
- Provide experience for students with minimal prior exposure in areas of K-12 teaching, adult learning, curriculum development, non- profit education, and other career paths in education.
The Fieldwork Coordinator works alongside the Program Manager and Faculty in the MA-Curriculum & Teaching Program to identify pre-K-12 classrooms and adult learning sites to support student observations. The majority of students are interested in school-based classrooms but others seek opportunities in art and cultural museums or adult learning sites. The bulk of this work takes place at the start of the fall semester. The Coordinator will continue to support students in regular office hours and attend meetings with program staff and faculty, as necessary. - Recruit classroom teachers and other educators (hereafter referred to as “hosts”) in other sites across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens to host TC students for fieldwork observations.
- Serve as liaison between hosts and students through the fall and spring semesters.
- Maintain relationships with hosts and continue to build a network of MA program graduates to serve as fieldwork hosts in future semesters
- Survey students to ensure they are matched with a fieldwork site that is aligned with their professional interests and when possible is within reasonable commuting distance
- For Prof Cert Students: Ensure that placement sites meet remaining requirements for state certification (such as grade levels they have not yet addressed)
- Coach students to develop effective communication with their host as needed.
- Respond to student issues that arise. Provide mentoring when a student experiences difficulties and collaborate with program faculty to problem solve and consider alternative plans if necessary.
- Alerting the program manager and director to issues that may put a student’s placement or academic progress in jeopardy
- Develop fieldwork materials with faculty guidance and maintain a database of host contacts and site information.
- Participate in program meetings as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- Previous Fieldwork Coordinators have built up a cadre of teachers and procedures from prior semesters; an ideal candidate will also have contacts in the NYC elementary and secondary schools.
