Position Summary

Pay Rate: $21.92 - $24.36 upon meeting probationary period requirements. This position is not eligible for remote work. Regular, in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs.

This position will be located in the Communication Arts and Sciences building, working Monday - Friday: 4:30PM - 1:00AM. May be required to work after-hours, weekends, and holidays.

This position is responsible for overseeing cleaning and security operations in academic, athletic, healthcare, performing arts, and/or research facilities. The role includes leading a custodial team of more than five full-time employees in buildings exceeding 200,000 square feet, unless otherwise specified. Key responsibilities include implementing energy conservation measures, maintaining security through locking and unlocking procedures, and reporting electrical, plumbing, or mechanical issues as needed. The position requires adherence to safety regulations, including lifting between 25 and 50 pounds, occasional heavy lifting up to 75 pounds, climbing ladders and stairs, overhead reaching, and operating heavy cleaning equipment such as automatic scrubbers, buffers, and extractors. Frequent bending, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, stooping, walking, and standing are also required. Candidates must be able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, recognize chemical, biological, or radioactive warning signs, wear a respirator, and remove snow using a shovel or snow blower. Additionally, they must retain training information related to custodial methods, equipment, and products; work effectively with student employees; engage and communicate with the university community; liaise with the Department of Public Safety; and manage product inventory. The role requires making independent decisions to achieve high cleaning standards using appropriate techniques, products, and equipment. Work environments may include indoor and outdoor settings, sometimes in harsh weather conditions, and occasionally alone in vacated buildings. The position also involves submitting verbal or written reports as directed.
 
The breakdown of responsibilities are as follows: 
40%: Perform and oversee light duty, vacuum, restroom and utility specialist including high performance cleaning functions.
 
20%: Plan, assign, instruct and check the work of assigned support employees and ensure adherence to processes; assess the cleanliness and prioritize the cleaning tasks for assigned space.
 
20%: Perform and oversee the process of stripping, scrubbing, refinishing, and sealing of resilient floor surfaces.
 
20%: Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development. Assist in the training of new support employees.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school graduate, GED, or equivalent.
  • Expert knowledge of heavy mechanical power cleaning and scrubbing equipment.
  • Expert knowledge of professional cleaning methods and materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to assign tasks and mentor support employees.
  • One year of satisfactory experience as a Custodian III with possession of MSU custodial cleaning competencies certification prior to completion of six months from time of placement, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Steady lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and frequent lifting over 75 pounds.
