About the role
Rare full-time opportunities to work as part of our dedicated team contributing towards the care, control and management of our Greater Sydney National Parks and Reserves, with the primary focus on visitor services.
These are not your typical office based roles! You’ll be primarily working in the great outdoors across multiple Parks where you will be responsible for educating and engaging with visitors. You will need to be available during our peak visitor times. The roles are based in the Greater Sydney Branch and working across the following locations:
- Greater Sydney Branch South – Royal National Park, Kamay Botany Bay National Park and Georges River National Park.
- Greater Sydney Branch North – Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Lane Cove National Park, Garigal National Park, Sydney Harbour North National Park.
You’ll be responsible for greeting and directing visitors to Parks, educating them on Park values, promoting a positive visitor experience and ensuring compliance with Park rules. A typical day could see you:
- providing information and advice to visitors on facilities, services and activities available
- fostering appreciation and enjoyment by visitors of park values
- promoting Park activities
- operating the visitor entry facilities that provide access to National Park areas
- collecting park use fees and issuing appropriate passes
- performing park compliance patrol duties
- providing office based assistance to Park Use Fee and Visitor Services Team
These roles will provide critical visitor services at our busiest Sydney parks during peak visitation periods including school holidays; leave will not be available during the Christmas/New Year periods to ensure acceptable levels of service delivery and operational function.
About You
To be successful in the role, you will:
- enjoy working outdoors and sharing information with visitors
- have experience acting independently on matters relating to the entry of visitors to the national park that are not covered by policy and where supervisors are not readily available
- have demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of vigilance and awareness of personal safety when conducting parking patrol and law enforcement activities and when handling and securing large sums of cash which are held in the visitor entrance station until the surplus is collected or banked in the organisation safe
- have superior customer service skills and the ability to communicate respectfully with a wide range of people, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
Essential Requirements
- Experience in cash handling procedures.
- Excellent oral communication, negotiation and customer service skills with experience dealing with customer inquiries and the ability to manage such inquiries in a manner that addresses customer’s concerns.
- Capacity and willingness to undertake enforcement duties associated with the park use fee system and the Departments’ / NPWS Regulations, with an ability to work unsupervised and adapt to competing priorities
- Basic computer skills and the ability to operate a two-way radio.
- Current manual driver’s licence.
- The holder of this role will be required to wear an NPWS uniform.
- This role may also involve regular evening and weekend work. This is a shift-based position, under the Crown Employees (Public Service Conditions of Employment) Reviewed Award 2009.
Note: Parts of these duties are performed outside of normal operating times, and staff are rostered in pairs to perform this function
