About the role
Lord Howe Island Board has an opportunity for a Team Leader World Heritage to work as part of the Environment and Community Services unit, heading up the World Heritage Program on beautiful Lord Howe Island.
As Team Leader World Heritage you will coordinate and supervise projects and staff to effectively manage the natural and cultural heritage of the Lord Howe Island Group World Heritage property.
You will provide team management and support for the delivery and on-going review of the Lord Howe Island Biodiversity Management Plan and the Permanent Park Preserve Plan of Management. Your focus will be on conserving the Islands’ biodiversity, including endemic species and unique ecological communities, and managing threats to these values. You will consider the objectives of the active tourism-centred island community and provide for visitor experience.
About You
Your ability to deliver results, manage projects and people, and to communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders will be essential to your success in this role. You’ll thrive in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities and have the ability to innovate, and to deliver outcomes with available resources. Through your sound leadership and experience in managing operational teams, you will maintain a supportive and outcomes driven unit of field crew and Rangers and liaise with the community on environmental issues.
Essential Requirements – As detailed in the Role Description
- Tertiary qualifications in natural resource management, ecology or a discipline relevant to the management of the LHIG World Heritage Property.
- Demonstrated experience in natural and cultural heritage management, and sound working knowledge of the requirements for managing World Heritage areas.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a multi-disciplinary team in a challenging environment.
- Demonstrated experience in interpreting and implementing environmental legislation, policies and procedures including experience in the preparation and evaluation of environmental assessment reports.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation, liaison, report and submission writing and community engagement skills.
- Effective organisational skills including ability to set work priorities and meet deadlines, manage projects, develop and manage budgets and capacity to maintain financial and project management systems.
- Current Australian drivers licence (minimum class C).

Who we are
Lord Howe Island is located in the Tasman Sea approximately 700km north east of Sydney and is part of NSW. The Island has a high proportion of rare and endemic birds, plants, and invertebrates, and has the southernmost coral reef in the world. Three-quarters of the Island is within the Permanent Park Preserve, which is managed similarly to a national park. There are approximately 445 residents, and tourism is the major industry and source of income on the Island. Approximately 16,000 people visit the Island each year and there are 21 accommodation lodges.
The Lord Howe Island Board (the Board) is a statutory authority established under the provisions of the Lord Howe Island Act 1953. The Board is responsible to the NSW Minister for the Environment and comprises four Islanders elected by the local community and three members appointed by the Minister. It is charged with the care, control and management of the Island and the affairs and trade of the Island. It is also responsible for the care, improvement and welfare of the Island and residents. “Island” as defined by the Act includes Lord Howe Island and all adjacent islands and coral reefs within one marine league of the Island. Ball’s Pyramid and adjacent islands are also included in this definition.
