Do you want your work to make a difference for NSW?

Working to protect the state’s environment and heritage.

About the role

Our national parks are extraordinary places, covering more than 9.5% of New South Wales and spanning diverse desert, forest, alpine, and coastal ecosystems. They are home to around 85% of the state’s approximately 900 threatened species, making them critical to the protection of biodiversity. Measuring ecological health, and linking this to our investment in management actions, is essential to delivering effective conservation outcomes across the national park estate.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service is offering a unique opportunity for a Manager, Ecological Health to join the team and contribute to the conservation of New South Wales’ natural environment, flora, and fauna. At the heart of this role is the implementation of a world-leading Ecological Health Performance Scorecard program, an initiative that systematically collects and reports ecological data to support adaptive, evidence-based park management.

This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring the delivery of best-practice and innovative approaches to ecological health monitoring, helping to shape conservation priorities and drive improved outcomes for biodiversity across the state.

About you

You will bring the skills and experience required to lead the design and delivery of a comprehensive ecological health monitoring program across New South Wales’ national park reserves. In this role, you will drive the establishment and ongoing management of best-practice, innovative systems, plans, and processes that support long-term conservation outcomes.

You will demonstrate a strong understanding of ecological survey and monitoring principles, underpinned by a commitment to rigorous methodologies and forward-thinking approaches to conservation science. As an accomplished project manager, you are equally confident briefing senior executives with expert insights as you are working hands-on in the field, deploying survey equipment and supporting on-ground operations.

NPWS is committed to building a robust pipeline of talent and ensuring strong representation of women in leadership roles. We aim to achieve a balanced and diverse leadership team. As such, we strongly encourage female candidates who possess the necessary capabilities and experience for these roles to apply.

Essential requirements

  • A relevant degree / tertiary qualification in environmental science, ecology or related field and a strong understanding of ecological monitoring principles.
