Job Summary:
The Head Cheerleading Coach is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Jacksonville State University cheerleading program, including the supervision, coaching, and development of the cheerleading squad and mascot, Cocky. This position ensures the proper training of collegiate cheerleading techniques and the successful execution of performances at all practices, athletic events, and designated university functions. The Head Cheerleading Coach manages the program’s budget, recruits and retains student-athletes and mascots who meet the university’s admission standards, academic requirements, and athletic skill levels, while fostering their academic and personal growth to ensure timely graduation. Additionally, this role coordinates and attends all cheerleading appearances on and off campus and serves as the primary liaison with the Marching Southerners, Hardcorp Pep Band, and the Go-Go’s Basketball Dance Team.
Employment in this position is contingent upon compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA and Conference affiliation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with the daily administrative duties of the program including scheduling, budget management, team management, team travel, compliance, alumni communication, game day preparation, and compliance with sport medicine policies and procedures.
- Coordinate and implement fundraisers to fund college nationals.
- Assesses skills of cheerleaders and assign team positions.
- Develops a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time to provide both individual and team development.
- Oversees cheer squad at practice and various athletic event including all football, volleyball, men and women’s basketball, which can include travel games.
- Trains cheerleaders in all aspects of spirit engagement, stunting, tumbling and dance.
- Coaches and instruct cheerleaders, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
- Observes cheerleaders during events and practices to determine the needs for individual or team improvement.
- Establishes and maintains standards of the behavior of cheerleaders and always provides proper supervision of the athletes.
- Monitors the academic performance of team members.
- Follows established procedures in the event of an injury.
- Models sports-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards cheerleaders, officials and spectators.
- Acts as a team representative and promotes cheerleading by communicating with the news media, booster clubs, service clubs, and other organizations.
- Responsible for equipment and uniform purchase and care and follows established procedures for supplies.
- Participates in special activities including banquets, award nights, pep rallies and any other required event.
- Maintains emergency information, insurance records and any equipment inventory, as well as other related information.
- Organizes and attends travel for in-season and post-season games for sports teams as directed.
- Coordinates with the athletic marketing department to assist in the promotion of sporting events, team and mascot appearances.
- Maintain proper safety certification.
- Employment in this position is contingent upon compliance with the rules and regulations of the university, the NCAA and the Conference affiliation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Current USA Cheer certification or the ability to become certified within 60 days of being hired
- Previous collegiate cheerleading coaching experience to include football and basketball
- Previous collegiate NCA or UCA competition coaching experience
- Ten (10) years or more high school coaching experience to include football, basketball and competition
- Ten (10) years or more high school competition coaching experience at NCA or UCA

Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree
- Two (2) years or more coaching experience with a Division I cheer program
- Two (2) years or more competitive coaching experience with a Division I cheer program at NCA or UCA
- Previous experience in community relations or other areas within a Division I athletic department
