The Opportunity 
The Senior Technical Officer contributes to the School of Computer Science and Engineering by developing, maintaining and efficiently managing teaching and research equipment, infrastructure and services in the laboratories. The Senior Technical Officer will identify research and teaching requirements in a specific area, facilitate the commissioning and maintenance of specialised equipment, and manage user access and training.  

  • Salary, Level 7: $110,073 - $119,132 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Full Time, Continuing  
  • Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia

This position reports to the School Manager, Tina Tuomikoski.  

Skills and Experience 

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in software or hardware design or a related area, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience within a tertiary education or research environment.  

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in providing technical support in an academic research environment.  

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in research environments and software/hardware maintenance.  

  • Excellent communication skills.  

  • Demonstrated ability to produce detailed technical documentation.  

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as contribute to technical support within a team environment.  

  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.  

  • Knowledge of equal opportunity principles in a diverse, multi-cultural environment.  

  • Have a strong understanding of conducting human experiments.  

  • Knowledge of ethics-approval process and experience in overseeing ethics approved user studies. 

 

Accountabilities:  

  • Oversee the safe, efficient, and effective day-to-day operation of equipment and services in the allocated laboratories.  

  • Authorise access to laboratories and equipment.  

  • Organise asset management, stock control and safe disposal of equipment and laboratory consumables.  

  • Coordinate, conduct, and evaluate user training and inductions.  

  • Conduct and coordinate the procurement, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of assigned laboratory equipment and consumables.  

  • Provide technical support for school researchers and academics to conduct user studies and support technical laboratory operations.  

  • Provide assistance to higher degree by research students, post-doctoral researchers, and research engineers with establishing their experimental systems and research projects.  

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of complex systems and procedures for user research and prototype development, including supporting ethics applications, ethics-approved user study/data collection.  

  • Advise on the analysis and interpretation of data to identify trends and test solutions, source additional related information where appropriate, and report on progress, to support resolving issues/problems.
