The School of Materials Science and Engineering is one of the top ranked Materials programs in the Asia-

Pacific regions and strongly positioned in every facet of materials science and engineering. It offers undergraduate programs in Materials Science and Engineering (Honours), as well as a number of combined degree programs with Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Commerce.

The Engagement & Events Officer is responsible for coordinating elements and initiatives to engage future and current students and create a unique community experience within the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Faculty of Science. This role is responsible for delivering communications and outreach events and supports the development, implementation and maintenance of the School’s communications, covering websites, social media, newsletters and events.


About the role

  • $103K - $110K plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 12 months
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role reports to the School Manager and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Respond to requests for outreach support internally and externally including organising outreach events, from logistical support through to post-event activities, with an aim to increase visibility, awareness and participation with students, industry and alumni.
  • Chair the School’s marketing committee including minute taking, managing assigned actions and follow-ups and project status reporting.
  • Manage online communities, the School website, digital display and digital learning support to increase engagement with students, industry and alumni and ensure compliance with UNSW standards.
  • Collate content and oversee the publication of the School’s annual report and newsletters.
  • Provide practical and proactive project support and administrative services to the School, including maintenance of digital filing systems, spreadsheets, image databases, websites and other administrative systems.
  • Manage the student volunteering program including, but not limited to, recruitment, training and rostering, and lead mentoring programs for current undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Build and maintain highly effective working relationships with the Faculty student recruitment team, ensuring support is provided to meet faculty needs as and when required.
  • Monitor, track and report on the status of project deliverables to ensure time, cost and quality metrics are in line with approved project plans for assigned projects.
  • Undertake ad-hoc activities as required by the School, including but not limited to HDR student and practicum desk allocation, key management and building and lab access.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A degree in a relevant field, ideally with Science and Engineering knowledge, with relevant experience in a similar institutional setting or work environment or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering a variety of events and sound understanding of the steps involved in working with event owners, presenters, stakeholders and audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience in relationship management of diverse stakeholder groups with a strong track record in the delivery of successful outcomes.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to navigate through competing deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated capability of producing content for diverse audiences and channels, including social media and websites.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
