The Opportunity

As Associate Director, Graduate Research School, you’ll take on a pivotal leadership role overseeing the end-to-end delivery of services across the Higher Degree Research lifecycle—from admissions and scholarships through to candidature management and examination. Reporting to and working closely with the Director, Graduate Research and Research Training, you’ll lead a dedicated team of professionals committed to delivering a seamless, client-focused HDR experience to candidates and supervisors.

You’ll collaborate with senior leaders across faculties, schools, and professional units to embed innovative systems, streamline operations, and ensure continuous improvement. This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of HDR at UNSW by supporting academic excellence, strengthening researcher capability, and contributing to the strategic priorities of the UNSW Research Plan and Progress for All strategy.

Skills and Experience

You’ll bring a strong mix of leadership, strategy, and higher education expertise, including:

  • A postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience in Higher Degree Research management.
  • Proven experience managing high-performing teams with a client-first mindset.
  • Expertise in HDR policy, funding, systems, and national/international research trends.
  • Outstanding communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to use data to inform decision-making.
