Details of the role
The Senior Research Fellow - Health Economist (Level C) will work in partnership with other economists, clinical researchers and social scientists to evaluate public health interventions targeting a range of infectious diseases in Australia and the Asia-Pacific. They will be responsible for conducting cost effectiveness and budget impact assessments alongside trials, modelling long term health outcomes and costs, synthesising relevant literature, and contributing to funding applications. Their work will have a strong focus on the economics of emerging diagnostics for infectious diseases. An academic at this level is expected to play a major role in research including the exercise of some leadership in research.
This role offers an opportunity to contribute to high‑impact, internationally recognised research that directly informs public health policy and practice. Working within a multidisciplinary environment, you will lead and deliver rigorous economic evaluations of infectious disease interventions, from emerging diagnostics through to large‑scale public health programs. The position combines advanced analytical work with research leadership, collaboration across disciplines, and contribution to competitive funding applications. Your work will support evidence‑based decision‑making in Australia and the Asia‑Pacific, while helping to strengthen the Institute’s research capability and national profile in health economics and health systems research.
The role of the Senior Research Fellow - Health Economist reports to Professor Virginia Wiseman/ Head of the Health Economics & Health Systems Group at the Kirby Institute, UNSW and has no direct reports.
Some key skills required:
- PhD degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. health economics, public health, biostatistics) with substantial relevant experience in design or evaluation of public health interventions.
- Extensive experience in the design and execution of research projects.
- Experience in the economic evaluation of infectious disease diagnostics.
- Demonstrated experience in leading high-quality research, including track record of obtaining competitive or contract research funding.
- Develop and lead a range of research projects focussing on the use of health economics and modelling to measure the costs and cost-effectiveness of public health interventions related to infectious diseases in Australia and the Asia-Pacific.
- Apply advanced analytical techniques of economic evaluation including the use of decision analytic software.
- Make independent contributions to research that have a significant impact in their field of expertise and create a nationally recognised research track record.
- Mentor and guide students, groups, and colleagues; supervise HDRs to timely completion as primary supervisor; and contribute to HDR review panels.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
