Basic Function: |
Provides leadership to the university's department of Environmental Health and Safety, Research Safety and Fire Prevention to further the achievement of university compliance, risk reduction and safety goals. The position directs, enhances, promotes and provides strategic planning for the departments of Environmental Health and Safety, Research Safety and Fire Prevention. The position manages areas that expose the university to risk that include occupational health and safety, life safety, fire safety, chemical and biological safety, hazardous materials management and environmental compliance. Reports to Associate VP for Facilities Planning and Operations.

Examples of Duties: |
Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: Provide leadership to all university campuses to achieve compliance with occupational health and safety regulations and requirements and promote programs that reduce university risks.
Ensure university compliance with environmental regulations and requirements.
Develop departmental strategic plans.
Oversee all department operations, manage budgets, manage external environmental and safety contracts and interact with various state and federal agencies.
Provide leadership and direct supervision to classified and unclassified staff. Perform related duties as assigned. |

Minimum Qualifications: |
Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in natural science, engineering, environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene or closely related field. Ten years of experience with progressive responsibility in environmental, compliance, health and safety management related experience in a complex environment, including management experience. License/Certification:
Knowledge Of: Strategic planning
Budgeting Environmental, health and safety issues * Campus/university organizational structures University administrative policies and procedures Research/academic environment Skill In: Direct contact and compliance discussion with regulators, development of requests for proposals, and selection and management of contractors *
Communication with a variety of constituents within and external to the university community * Preparing and presenting findings and recommendations using written reports or oral presentations * Managing complex projects, teams and people * Exercise of independent judgment in situations that may involve substantial risk to persons or property * Leadership, managerial and organizational approaches * Ability To: Write and communicate effectively

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable: |
Masters Degree in closely related field; Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Hazardous Materails Management (CHMM) or Industrial Hygienist (CIH). |

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements: |
Light work-Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally. Ability to work non-traditional hours as needed. |
