About the Position: 

Facilities Management is committed to planning, developing, and maintaining a safe, sustainable, and high-quality learning and working environment for the campus community. Facilities Management provides oversight of university resources and assets and is responsible for the development of the University’s facilities including land use planning, capital improvement, project development, construction, as well as facilities operations and maintenance including custodial services, landscape services, building trade services, mechanical and electrical, and recycling services. We seek an exceptional individual to join our Landscape Services team as the Pest Control and Spray Specialist. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under general supervision of the Landscape Services Manager, or their designee, the Pest Control and Spray Specialist identifies and eradicates noxious pests, insects, plant diseases, and weed conditions in campus buildings and grounds; assists in the planning of horticultural spray and pest eradication programs; and applies horticultural sprays and other dangerous chemical agents.

The Pest Control and Spray Specialist performs specialized spraying and pest eradication duties for a major portion of their work time. Grounds worker classifications or other grounds classifications may spray chemicals in assigned areas on campus on an occasional basis and may occasionally assist a Pest Control and Spray Specialist in specialized spraying activities but are not required to possess the knowledge and abilities required to carry out a campus horticultural spray and pest eradication program. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

Completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience Minimum of two years of journey-level landscape experience with one year in specialized pest and/or spray control work Knowledge of plant disease identification and control methods, weed identification, conditions and control methods, and living habits and identification of pests and insects. Knowledge of characteristics and resultant effects of pesticides, growth regulators and fertilizers. Knowledge of available materials and control techniques. Knowledge of County, State and Federal regulations governing the use of chemicals. Knowledge of laws and regulations governing the use of chemicals. General knowledge of the relationship of the environment to pest control General knowledge of the environmental impact of certain chemicals and safety precautions when using these chemicals; Ability to recognize and treat horticultural and pest problems. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to use a computer to complete work assignments and enter data. Ability to wear a respirator.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.  

Preferred Qualifications

Understanding of relationships between pests, plant health, and their lifecycles in order to properly time treatments for their eradication or control. Ability to perform math equations associated with chemical applications. Read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position. Ability to calibrate application equipment. Minimum one year of experience using pesticides in a landscape setting.

License/Certifications

A Valid California Department of Pesticide Regulation. Qualified Applicator Certificate and/or Qualified Applicators License. Category B and/or A - Landscape Maintenance. A Valid California Driver's License. Live Scan required. Ability to obtain: Category A-Residential, industrial, and Institutional within one year of appointment.
