Instructional Student Assistant Research Pool

POSITION

The Department of Public Health at CSU Fullerton invites applications for its Instructional Student Assistant Research Pool.

We welcome applications from current CSUF undergraduate and graduate students in the Public Health department to assist/provide support to faculty in public health-related research.

Program: Global & community Health Development (GCHD)

GCHD is a program that oversees and supports both undergraduate and graduate students in public health at CSUF enrolled in community health classes to gain applied learning experiences in the communities served by the university at the local level. Through partnerships with local community organizations focused on serving communities that experience marginalization, students will gain first-hand experience in applying principles of public health to advance health equity in Orange County outside the university classroom. 

Duties may include:

  • Assisting the professor as needed with one or more of the following tasks:
  • Participate in coordination/scheduling of meetings with community partners in advance of the semester to establish partnership and project for curriculum support
  • Conduct research and analysis and draft reports/findings on community of interest
  • Create shared drives/documents and keep all the parties aware of updates to program, itineraries for class trips and taking minutes at all meetings to share with the group
  • Assist with planning and logistics and equipment needs for events associated with the program (including meetings)
  • Any other administrative or coordinating duty as assigned by professor
  • Note: graduate student will take a “mentor” role but will share duties with undergraduate

REQUIRED
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: UG Applicants must be current enrolled CSUF students in their 3rd or 4th year of the Public Health program with an interest in pursuing a career in community health, public policy or addressing social determinants of health (i.e., housing, transportation, urban planning, etc.) Graduate applicants must be enrolled in the MPH program at CSUF with an interest in health promotion and disease prevention at the community level.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Highly organized and dependable
  • Eager to gain professional experience
  • Able to complete assignments in a timely manner
  • Reliable, outgoing and able to work independently;
  • Experienced in Internet use and Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher and Outlook;
  • Reliable transportation.

TIME COMMITMENT: 10 hours per week for 1 academic year. Hours must be scheduled during normal business hours (Monday – Friday between 8 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.). Occasional attendance during evening and weekend outreach events may be required. Applicants able to schedule the maximum hours/duration listed for the internship typically gain a more in-depth experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior organizing/event planning experience preferred
  • Bilingual skills a plus, but not required
  • Experience with community outreach and community programs a plus, but not required
  • Multilingual abilities appreciated

COMPENSATION

All Instructional Student Assistant appointments are made under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CSU system and the United Auto Workers.  Initial appointments are for one semester only.

Classification Range: $17.86 - $23.84 per hour
Anticipated hiring range depending on qualification, not to exceed $22.
