Classification Salary Range: $5,537 - $10,014 per month

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $6,500 - $7,350 per month.

The final salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.

About the Department/Position:

Under the direction of the Environmental Health & Safety Director, The Occupational Health & Safety Specialist will be the point person for campus-related Occupational Safety and Health needs. This incumbent will develop, implement, and maintain campus health and occupational safety (EH&S) plans, programs, and training systems. The incumbent will investigate all work-related injuries, incidents, or illnesses; perform periodic inspections of makers spaces, shops, and workspaces and identify hazards that need to be mitigated. 

Special Working Conditions:

Working outside of the regular schedule may be required to follow up on workplace incidents, respond to emergencies, and contact Cal/OSHA in the event of an incident. Training may also need to occur outside of regularly scheduled shifts. May be able to telecommute on a limited basis.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain campus health and occupational safety (EH&S) plans, programs, and training systems.
  • Develop and maintain records and databases to track information, analyze trends, coordinate program improvements, and file reports.
  • Identify potential hazards and work with departments to implement and ensure corrective action occurs.
  • Provide training and oversight for all the Health and safety-related programs.
  • Manage Health & Safety related software programs such as Risk and Safety Solutions (RSS), AED program software and EHS website development and updates
  • Review and contribute to the EHS annual strategic plan.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of the administration, faculty, and staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's Degree in a related field such as Occupational Safety, physical or health sciences, engineering, or a similar course of study and four (4) - five (5) years working in the Environmental Health and safety field for a large organization.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Overall knowledge of state and federal health & safety laws, including Cal/OSHA, California Fire Code, Title 19, and Title 22.
  • Ability to write and deliver programs related to areas of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of Injury Illness Prevention Program.
  • Exercise tact and good judgment in responding to requests for information and in all actions taken.
  • Working knowledge of fire and life safety codes and requirements
  • Working knowledge of building codes and occupancy requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Laboratory experience, specifically in a university setting.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Additional certifications preferred such as a CHMM, CIT, STS, CHST, OHST, CPE, CEAS.
  • Knowledge of construction safety orders and the ability to read and review plans for new builds and tenant improvements.
  • Implementing contractor safety programs.
