About the Position: 

The Athletics department at Cal State Fullerton strives to provide an intercollegiate athletics program that is an integral part of the total educational experience at Cal State Fullerton (CSUF) and fits within the overall mission of the University. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Sports Media Specialist (Public Affairs/Communication Specialist II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Athletics Director, Video and Broadcasting, the Sports Media Specialist administers the dissemination of information regarding the intercollegiate athletics program. Coordinates photography needs, provides media relations materials, and serves as media liaison for all fifteen intercollegiate athletic teams. Assists with developing a communications plan that will increase the visibility and brand for the Athletics Department and the University. Responsible for continual development of internet publicity including website and social media for Intercollegiate Athletics. Designs and maintains editorial and graphic content on intercollegiate athletics website. Works collaboratively with University Strategic Communication to plan and coordinate all major press conferences and media requests for the Athletics Department. Manages communications to external community through social media including publicity for teams, promotion of events, and ticket sales. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field and up to two years or related professional or technical experience. Knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, as well as some exposure to marketing and marketing research. Possession of strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles. Ability to serve as a media spokesperson and/or senior editor. Working knowledge of copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications and the media. Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles, and formats. Ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals. Ability to analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles. Possession of strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills. Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages. Working knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods. Ability to apply market research to identify communication needs and target audiences. Ability to apply appropriate statistical techniques and methods to research. Possession of exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening, and interpretive skills. Ability to provide lead work direction. Working knowledge of popular social media outlets with the ability to schedule, submit information, and regulate content.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.  

Preferred Qualifications

Media or Public Relations experience in a collegiate media relations office. Knowledge of sport statistics programs. Must maintain working knowledge of compliance with relevant National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and conference rules.

License/Certifications

A valid California driver's license.
