Department Overview: |
The Plant Variety Protection Office (PVPO) provides intellectual property protection of new plant and seed varieties following the Plant Variety Protection Act. The program receives applications from breeders and breeder representatives after grow-out trials of the new varieties have been completed. PVPO examines applications for distinctness, uniformity, and stability and to ensure the variety has not been sold or commercialized within one year for US breeders and four years for International breeders. PVPO issues a certificate of protection for 20 years if a plant variety is new, distinct, uniform, and stable. |
