Department Overview:

The Psychology major is one of the largest majors in the College of Letters & Science, focusing on several areas in the field of Psychological Science: biological, clinical, cognition & cognitive neuroscience, perception, developmental, and social & personality.

The Advising Office supports undergraduate psychology students in their graduate school and career exploration through advising, resources, programming, and events. There are 3 Academic Advisors and one Career Advisor within the Advising Office. This position will be supervised by the Career Advisor.

Anticipated Hours Per Week:

Minimum: 5 Maximum: 10

Schedule:

Interns must be able to work 5-10 hours per week during the summer and throughout the course of the Fall semester between the hours of 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Hours are flexible to accommodate a student’s schedule as needed. However, interns may also be required to assist with some student programming or events outside of normal business hours throughout the semester. The intern will work in-person, with potential for ad hoc remote work upon discussion with the supervisor.

Qualifications:

In order to apply, students must:
- Be currently enrolled in a psychology undergraduate major or related major (social work, rehabilitation psych, etc.)
- Show enthusiasm for psychology-related graduate school and career exploration

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Fluent with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, along with Google Suite and Microsoft Teams, and Canva
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- High level of professionalism in dealing with staff, students, and alumni
- Attention to detail, ability to follow instructions and work independently
- Strong interpersonal skills and a service mindset
- Demonstrated success in completing complex projects, including multi-tasking and juggling multiple priorities
- Understanding of career and professional development related skills, and willingness to learn
- Punctuality, reliable attendance, adaptability, and flexibility, along with diplomacy
- Demonstrate commitment to diversity and building an inclusive community and UW-Madison

Position Summary/Job Duties:

- Update and maintain the Internship/Job Board for Psych Majors, which includes identifying appropriate internship and career opportunities for undergraduate psychology majors
- Provide career-related programming and event support and develop marketing and promotional materials
- Identify and execute an individual project targeted at providing additional career related support or resources for student body
- Collaborate with the Career Advisor to collect and analyze student data about our programs and services; make recommendations for improvements based on that data
- Complete administrative tasks, such as filing, data entry, stocking handouts, etc.
- Work on collective programming and projects with other staff, including the Academic Advising Team
- Perform other duties as assigned by Career Advising staff
