Department Overview:

 The Division of Extension Health & Well-Being Institute supports healthier lives by working with and for the people, communities, and Tribal nations of Wisconsin to build relationships, facilitate learning, and pursue data-informed and culturally-based strategies.

Schedule:

 8 weeks at 20 hours per week.
Typical office hours would fall in the hours of 8:00-4:30 on Mon-Fri, with some flexibility needed for occasional nights/weekends. Some remote work may be possible.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

 Minimum: $17.50

Qualifications:

 A person with strong connections with Tribal communities and/or organizations in the Great Lakes region.
Employment will require a criminal background check.
Student must be enrolled for credit at an educational institution. Student will need to show proof of enrollment before starting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Experience and/or interest related to food sovereignty and nutrition education
- Familiarity with social media platforms

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The UW Madison Division of Extension Health & Well-Being Institute invites applications from those with expertise, cultural knowledge, and passion for working with Native American communities.

Intern in this position will be working with the Extension Sawyer County FoodWIse Program in collaboration with Lac Courte Oreilles tribal partners.

Interns may be able to choose specific projects or areas of focus from the listed job duties to align with their interests and career goals while contributing to program objectives.

Support Youth Summer Programming
Assist with nutrition, gardening, and food sovereignty activities for the youth summer program in July.

Collaborate on Farm Operations
Work with farm staff to revitalize planting and harvesting efforts.
Engage the community in farm activities, including greenhouse and raised garden bed projects for Elders and Tribal members with limited mobility.
Participate in efforts to set up hydroponics and aquaponics systems.
Assist with a project to test heritage corn varieties.

Create Community Engagement Materials
Develop video clips and social media content to share farm updates and engage the community.

Connect with Tribal Food Distribution Program
Support initiatives linking the University Farm with the Tribal Food Distribution program to strengthen collaboration.

Contribute to Greenhouse Planning
Investigate pathways to reinvigorate the on-site greenhouse for future planting and harvesting opportunities

Garden maintenance and planting (lifting 10 lb, bending over, kneeling)
