 9-12 hours, depending on appointment level


CHEM 103, 104, and 109 run during 9, 10, and 12 weeks of the semester, respectively.

Labs run Monday through Friday:

- 7:45-10:45am
- 11:00am-2:00pm
- 2:25-5:25pm
- 5:40-8:40pm

Teaching assignments are planned around each LA's own class schedule. Applicants need to have open blocks of time during which they are available to teach. Those with full class schedules are difficult to accommodate.

Exact section assignments are not finalized until about a week before the start of classes.

IMPORTANT: Please note that this position is dependent on final budget approval and may not be guaranteed at this time due to university-wide budget uncertainty. Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

 Minimum: $15.00

Qualifications:

 Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The assured consideration date is June 30, 2025.


Applications will then continue to be accepted until all positions are filled.


- Applicants must be UW-Madison students currently enrolled for the Fall 2025 semester.
- Undergraduate students majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering are preferred but students with a different major AND strong chemistry background are encouraged to apply.
- Applicants must have completed general chemistry (CHEM 104 or 109) with a grade of B or better.
- Applicants who only completed CHEM 103 will not be considered for the position.
Students who completed CHEM 115 and 116 as well as other chemistry classes will be considered.
- Intermediate level courses in organic, analytical, and/or inorganic are a plus, but not required.
- A minimum overall GPA of 3.00 is required. An overall GPA of 3.30 or higher is strongly preferred.
- In-person lab experience is strongly preferred.
- Work during midterm weeks will be required. There is no lab session running during finals' week.
- Third or fourth year students are preferred but second year students with an especially strong chemistry background will also be considered.

Applicants should enjoy chemistry and be eager to share their enthusiasm for the subject with other students! The successful candidate will have excellent communication and time management skills, be able to work with students of diverse backgrounds, be a team player, and be dependable, professional, and willing to learn.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The estimated time commitment for LA positions for two (or three) labs per week is 9 (or 12) hours per week. Job duties include:
- Supervise CHEM 103, 104 or 109 labs alongside a teaching or faculty assistant (3.25 hours per lab)
- Answer students questions and offer guidance when appropriate (including lab technique demonstration, instrument troubleshooting, discussion of class content …)
- Ensure safe laboratory practices are followed by students
- Prepare ahead for laboratory sessions by reviewing lab manual, lab videos, and attending weekly lab briefings
- Additional duties can include support role for emergency subbing for fellow LAs and course material review
NOTE: Lab Assistants are NOT involved in lecture and discussion, they are also not responsible for grading of the lab reports, only lab supervision.

Required training begins Monday, August 25, 2025 through Friday, August 29, 2025

Standing for long periods of time (up to 3.5 hrs) at laboratory benches and walking around the laboratory.
