Department Overview:

 The Center for Human Genomics and Precision Medicine focusses on biomedical research, driving innovation in genomics, molecular biology, and personalized healthcare. The mission of the center is to translate genomic insights into meaningful clinical applications, advancing the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of human disease. The Webb Lab focuses on the intersection of stem cell biology, functional genomics, and disease modeling. Using cutting-edge tools such as CRISPR editing, transcriptomic profiling, and patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), the Webb Lab investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying complex ultra rare genetic disorders.

Schedule:

 This position involves weekend-only work, with tasks dependent on the current needs of the stem cell cultures. The time commitment may vary based on the number of cultures and where they are in the process. On some weekends, work may be needed on both Saturday and Sunday, while other weekends may only require one day.
Estimated hours: 1–3 hours per day
Typical weekend total: 2–6 hours
Required window for lab access: Between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM (no evening or night shifts)
The lab is flexible and understanding. If you need a weekend off occasionally, that’s completely fine, as long as you communicate in advance. We have a supportive team with members who can cover shifts when needed.

Qualifications:

 Prior experience with cell culture techniques is preferred (stem cell experience is a plus, but not required)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Comfortable working independently in a lab setting and following sterile technique protocols
Strong attention to detail and reliable time management
Willingness to learn and adapt to evolving lab needs
Good communication skills and a collaborative attitude

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Primary duties include:
Performing routine maintenance of stem cell cultures, including media changes
Replating and passaging cells as needed based on experimental timelines
Capturing microscope images to document cell morphology and confluence
Maintaining sterile technique and accurate lab records
Communicating any issues or concerns to lab staff in a timely manner

This role is critical for ensuring continuity in long-term stem cell experiments and offers hands-on experience in a dynamic research environment. Depending on student availability and motivation, further duties/projects/responsibilities can be discussed down the line.

Physical Demands:

Ability to work at a biosafety cabinet for extended periods (typically 1–3 hours per day)
Fine motor skills for pipetting and handling delicate cell culture materials
Occasional lifting of lab supplies (generally under 20 lbs)
