Department Overview:

 The Department of African Cultural Studies provides research and teaching in the languages and expressive cultures of Africa and Africans around the world. This includes work on both graduate and undergraduate levels, and emphasizes the development and application of analytical, linguistic, and methodological tools that enable students to work effectively and imaginatively across regions, languages, cultural forms, methodologies, and disciplines.

Schedule:

 This course is scheduled Monday through Friday from 9:55am to 10:45am. Class meetings are not flexible.

Qualifications:

 • Enrolled as a graduate student at UW-Madison making satisfactory progress towards a degree.
• Bachelor’s degree in Arabic Language Studies, Linguistics, applied linguistics, African Cultural Studies, Curriculum and Instruction, World language Education, or a related field.
• Advanced proficiency in modern standard Arabic across all skills—speaking, reading, writing, listening and cultural understanding
• Prior experience teaching language to foreign language learners.
• Familiarity with language acquisition strategies and classroom technology

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment
• Demonstrated commitment to language education and student success

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Key responsibilities include:
• Teach Elementary Modern Standard Arabic classes to foreign and/or second language learners
• Grade assignments, quizzes, and exams in a timely and constructive manner
• Provide academic support and guidance to students throughout the learning process
• Collaborate with the African languages program director to enhance curriculum delivery and classroom engagement
• Develop lesson plans and support other learning activities to achieve the course objectives and learning outcomes
• Participate in monthly pedagogy chat with other language instructors in the African languages program
• Take a one-credit teaching methods in African Languages course in Fall 2025
