A bit about the role
Lead and manage the Botanic Horticulture team to deliver high-quality horticultural landscapes across the municipality, ensuring timely responses to customer requests and adherence to industry best practices.
Strategically oversee maintenance and construction contracts, capital projects, with a focus on Wilson Botanic Park and other key public gardens, ensuring horticultural assets are planned, maintained, and upgraded to the highest standards.
What you’ll deliver
- Develop and coordinate horticultural works programs for Wilson Botanic Park and other high-profile City of Casey landscapes, providing expert advice on species selection and plant resilience.
- Manage and enhance botanic collections in line with Wilson Botanic Park’s classification as a Botanic Garden, while actively participating in industry initiatives like ‘Care for the Rare’ and ‘BGANZ’.
- Lead contract and project management for maintenance and capital works, including preparing specifications, overseeing tenders, supervising contractors, and ensuring compliance with Australian Standards.
- Provide strategic horticultural guidance to internal and external stakeholders, including Councillors and community groups, through reports, grant applications, and policy development.
- Oversee operational budgets and staff coordination, ensuring safe herbicide/pesticide use, continuous improvement in horticultural practices, and prioritisation of capital works projects.
What you’ll bring
- A tertiary qualification of AQF level 5 or above in a Horticultural discipline or relevant experience.
- Demonstrated leadership experience working in a botanic garden or large public garden.
- Demonstrated experience in establishing and managing horticultural and landscape assets,
- Demonstrated experience in managing contractors and their budgets.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Willingness to undergo pre-employment background checks including National Criminal History Check, Working with Children Check, Eligibility to Work check and Functional Assessment (Medical/physio)
