The Opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Commodity Trader to join our team to be part of one of the east coasts most dynamic grain supply chain operations.
Working closely with the General Manager and the broader trading and operations teams, this is a senior role and will be responsible for trading key commodities and driving volume through our supply chain.
As the Commodity Trader you will develop trading strategies that maximise supply chain efficiencies as well as identify profitable opportunities to help our business grow. Ideally you will possess or develop relationships with key industry participants like brokers (trade and grower), logistics providers and other relevant partners and be able to work with our internal teams of logistics and execution staff to ensure smooth transaction from end to end.
As a team first player, you will inspire and support others within our business with your temperament and experience. The development of young talent will be a key requirement of this role.

Your Role and Responsibilities
- Assist in the collation and interpretation of our Supply and Demand Analysis.
- Develop and implement trading strategies to ensure the budget ambitions of our business are met
- Work with our accumulation team to ensure our supply chain, accumulation and trading strategies are met
- Foster relationships with key stakeholders, customers both here and abroad and various market participants as required to grow our business and execute our strategy
- Responsible for various hedging strategy and position management to ensure positions stay within the agreed risk management policy while still delivering on our trading mandate
- Initiate, negotiate and agree on terms of commodity purchase/sales contracts, bulk ocean freight contracts and work through execution with the Logistics team
- At all times you will act with integrity and honesty to promote and enhance Qube’s reputation within our industry and in the eyes of our customers and suppliers
Skills and Experience that you possess:
- You have a working understanding of both the Australian grains industry and international trade flows that can only come from 5+ years of trading experience in a similar role
- You understand and can assist in the collation and analysis of various supply and demand factors and how they drive the fundamentals when physically trading Wheat, Sorghum and Barley
- Working knowledge of relevant futures and FX markets and how to use these to hedging purposes as required
- You have demonstrated an ability to turn analysis into strategy and strategy into action.
- Your ability to work as a part of a high functioning team is paramount. You will lead when required and have a strong focus in developing junior talent within the group. You will drive high standards and be able work autonomously when required.
- Strong attention to detail on contract administration and management.
- A working understanding of Bulk Ocean Freight will be advantageous
Desired Qualifications
- You will have legal authority to work in Australia on a full-time basis.
- Tertiary Degree in relevant field would be advantageous but not essential. What is essential is that you will demonstrate your entrepreneurial flair and keen eye for opportunity
- You will be confident, optimistic, motivated, resilient and keen to show your drive and work ethic as a part of a team.
- You will be considered but decisive.
- You will be willing to learn whilst also ready to teach.
- You will be a strong communicator, comfortable in a corporate environment and just as confident when dealing with growers and customers alike
