Fleet Services is responsible for managing our university's 1,500 state vehicles which includes a rental vehicle fleet of approximately 150 vehicles. The Bus Driver and Reservation Coordinator is responsible for working with customers to arrange the logistics of all bus reservations while also serving as the primary bus driver for the approximately 200 reservations annually. Reporting to the Fleet Services Operations Manager, our Bus Drivers transport faculty, staff, students, and visitors on various charter trips in Virginia Tech passenger buses, vans, and other state vehicles. Trips occur throughout the week, including days, nights, and weekends. Additional responsibilities include loading and unloading luggage, maintaining trip logs, assisting individuals with disabilities, fueling and cleaning the vehicle, and notifying the shop supervisor of any maintenance issues or concerns. All of this work is performed while providing excellent customer service to all guests.

Qualified applicants who currently possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) can expect a starting salary around $48,000 annually with benefits. Applicants are not required to currently have a CDL but must be able to obtain one within the first 6 months of employment. Virginia Tech will pay the training costs and fees. The starting salary for a finalist without a CDL will be approximately $45,000 with benefits and the potential for a raise after the required CDL and endorsements are obtained.

Required Qualifications

Driving-Related Skills
• Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within the first six months of employment. Virginia Tech will pay for all training costs.
• Maintaining a current CDL with the appropriate endorsements is a condition for ongoing employment after obtaining the CDL.
• Proficient at reading driving directions, maps and directions from GPS devices.
• Ability to use an iPad tablet for reading itineraries and completing pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
• Ability to follow relevant safety regulations and state laws governing vehicle operation ensuring that passengers follow safety regulations.
• Ability to safely operate a passenger bus and other vehicles.
• Ability to operate automotive equipment and gas pumps.
• Successful completion of pre-employment criminal conviction, driving records, and drug test background checks as required for a CDL driver.
• Incumbents are also subject to random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident drug and alcohol screening.

Other Skills & Abilities
• Strong customer service skills.
• Ability to safely and independently move and handle items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel)
• Ability to arrange and participate in web meetings and teleconferences (Zoom and MS Teams)
• Ability to edit and print PDF files.

Preferred Qualifications

• Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B or higher, with passenger and air brake endorsements.
• Possession of a DOT medical certification.
• Experience transporting passengers.
• Previous experience operating a large passenger vehicle and/or charter bus.
• Prior experience organizing schedules and coordinating services
• Familiarity with the Virginia Tech campus.
