Job Description
HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ROLE:
1) You'll be part of the Recreational Sports department, a collaborative and student-centered organization committed to enhancing wellbeing, physical activity, sport, and fitness through high-quality facilities, programs, and experiences for the campus community.
2) You’ll be reporting to the Golf Course Superintendent in a 1500-hour, non-benefited position.
3) You’ll support the daily maintenance, conditioning, and presentation of the Virginia Tech Golf Course and surrounding grounds.
4) You’ll perform a wide range of turfgrass and landscape maintenance duties to help ensure the course is safe, playable, and maintained to a high standard for students, faculty, staff, guests, and other users.
5) You’ll play an important support role in the day-to-day operation of the maintenance team by assisting with the hiring, training, and scheduling of part-time staff.
Schedule: This is a 1500-hour, non-benefits position and does not provide year-round employment. This role is expected to work primarily during the golf course maintenance season, typically from late February or March through November, with exact start and end dates dependent on weather and operational needs. The schedule will vary based on seasonal demands, course use, and maintenance priorities. The position regularly requires early morning starts and will include weekend and holiday work as needed. Additional hours may be required during periods of heavy course use, tournament preparation, or special maintenance projects.

Required Qualifications
• High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Experience in golf course maintenance, landscaping, groundskeeping, athletics field maintenance, or similar outdoor maintenance work
• Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor labor on a regular basis
• Ability to safely operate maintenance equipment and tools or ability to learn quickly
• Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and strong work ethic
• Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a team
• Ability to assist with directing and supporting part-time staff in daily work assignments
• Ability to work early morning hours, as well as weekends and holidays as needed
• Valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
• Previous experience on a golf course maintenance crew
• Experience helping train, schedule, or lead part-time or seasonal employees
• Basic knowledge of turfgrass maintenance and golf course conditioning practices
• Familiarity with irrigation systems and basic troubleshooting
• Experience operating specialized golf course equipment such as triplex mowers, utility vehicles, bunker rakes, or similar equipment
