Job Description

The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC in Roanoke, VA, is dedicated to the promotion of health and the prevention and treatment of lifestyle-related disease. The Mishra Laboratory at FBRI is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Associate to work on AHA-funded research projects focused on cardiometabolic disease, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), mitochondrial biology, cardiac remodeling, and cardiovascular physiology.

The primary responsibilities of this position include designing and conducting independent research studies using in vitro and in vivo models, analyzing and interpreting experimental data, preparing manuscripts and grant applications, and mentoring trainees within the laboratory. A major component of this position will involve mouse cardiovascular physiology and cardiac disease modeling, including small-animal cardiac surgery models such as transverse aortic constriction (TAC), myocardial infarction (MI), and related models of cardiac stress, remodeling, and heart failure. The successful candidate will also participate in mouse echocardiography, exercise interventions, tissue collection, molecular biology, biochemical analyses, and animal colony management. The candidate should be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.

Required Qualifications

• PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Exercise Physiology, Biology, Veterinary Sciences, or a related field. PhD must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment, with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining.
• Experience with mouse handling, animal experimentation, and in vivo cardiovascular research models.
• Hands-on experience or strong working knowledge of small-animal cardiac surgery models, including TAC, MI, or related models of cardiac injury, remodeling, or heart failure.
• Experience in molecular biology techniques including RT-PCR, western blotting, cloning, immunostaining, fluorescence microscopy, mammalian cell culture, and biochemical assays.
• Strong scientific writing skills with a demonstrated record of publications and presentations.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
• Ability to stand, walk, stoop, bend for long periods of time.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience performing mouse cardiac surgeries, especially TAC, MI, ischemia-reperfusion injury, or related cardiovascular disease models.
• Experience with mouse echocardiography and in vivo cardiovascular phenotyping.
• Experience with cardiovascular physiology, heart failure, cardiac remodeling, or cardiometabolic disease research.
• Experience with metabolism, mitochondrial biology, or molecular mechanisms of cardiac dysfunction.
• Experience with exercise physiology and/or HFpEF research.
• Prior mentoring or teaching experience.
