Job Description
The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech is currently looking to fill an LVT position that supports the College of Veterinary Medicine's a Shelter Medicine and Surgery clerkship. This position will assist at numerous animal shelters and animal welfare organizations in the New River Valley. Each day is allocated to a different facility, which requires daily commute.
Required Qualifications
LVT Licensed Veterinary Technician. Considerable experience in a veterinary practice with knowledge of surgical procedures, general laboratory operations, and anesthetic and surgical equipment. Experience and familiarity with veterinary anesthesia machines, surgical instruments, procedures, and terminology. Basic knowledge of animal handling and restraint. Competency in calculating and drawing up medications, including controlled substances, under veterinarian supervision, with a thorough understanding of DEA compliance requirements. Strong organizational and communication skills. Ability to work efficiently with little supervision. Ability to multitask effectively and perform well in a fast-paced, high-stress environment. Ability to adapt to changing priorities and workflows throughout the day. Strong critical-thinking skills with the ability to think creatively and develop practical solutions to challenges. Demonstrates patience, professionalism, and a willingness to support others in a positive learning environment. Ability to mentor, teach, and provide constructive guidance to students, interns, and team members while fostering a culture of continuous learning and collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree in Biology, Animal Science, Dairy Science, Veterinary Technology, or related area. Experience in shelter medicine and/or high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgery. Knowledge of computers with emphasis on word processing and simple spreadsheets.
