Job Description
The Division of Information Technology Human Resources team is dedicated to fostering talent and boosting employee engagement throughout the organization, supporting over 350 employees in the Blacksburg area, the Greater Washington DC area, and various remote locations. We are seeking an HR professional to join our team.
This position may be filled as an HR Generalist or an HR Coordinator dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
HR Generalist description and qualifications
The Human Resources Generalist plays a crucial role in delivering efficient operational talent management HR services to various business units within the division. Responsibilities encompass a wide range of tasks, including talent acquisition coordination, position classification and compensation management, initial point of contact for employee relations matters, interpretation of HR policies, and streamlined HR administration.
In addition to these core duties, the HR Generalist serves as the department's liaison with various campus offices, including the Division of Human Resources and Payroll, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration to efficiently address staff-related issues. They serve as a valuable resource, offering guidance to assigned business units to ensure compliance with employment laws, regulations, and industry standards. Furthermore, they actively participate in division-wide projects and collaborate within cross-functional teams, with opportunities to take on short-term stretch assignments aimed at enhancing their professional development.
Required Qualifications
● Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and experience in various aspects of human resources such as recruitment, compensation, performance management, employee relations, or related HR functions that equates to a bachelor’s degree
● Experience in developing job postings and position descriptions, reviewing candidate pools, providing guidance on starting pay, and/or assisting managers in basic employee relations matters
● Experience interpreting and applying policies, exercising sound judgment, employing effective problem-solving approaches, and handling sensitive, confidential information
● Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
● Experience using enterprise human resources software solutions and data query tools
● Experience working with supervisors, leadership, and administration in the delivery of human resources programs and operations
Preferred Qualifications
● Experience delivering HR Generalist work in a large and complex organization
● Professional certifications by Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) or similar professional body
● Demonstrated capacity to investigate complex human resources issues and compose well-structured, insightful reports, and recommendations
● Experience in visa sponsorship
HR Coordinator description and qualifications
The HR Coordinator position contributes to the HR team by providing general office duties, recruitment support, transactional support, and records management. In addition, the HR Coordinator will be expected to provide guidance and support to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations, and university policies and procedures. Role requires handling sensitive/confidential information with discretion, as well as demonstrating a strong communication acumen. This position can be considered a stepping stone into the HR Generalist role and will cross-train in many of those duties over time.
Required Qualifications
● Bachelor's degree in human resources or other business-related field, or a combination of education, training, and experience that equates to a bachelor’s degree.
● Working experience that demonstrates an understanding of at least one of the following HR programs: recruitment and selection, job analysis, classification and compensation, and employee relations.
● Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
● Exceptional organizational skills, with the demonstrated ability to work independently with little supervision.
● Exceptional customer service skills with the ability to communicate in a professional and courteous manner; interact respectfully and comfortably with all individuals in a diverse, multicultural environment; remain calm and polite in stressful situations; exercise excellent judgment, discretion and initiative.
● Able to organize and prioritize a variety of competing demands.
