Job Description
The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is one of the largest ECE departments in the country, with strong education and research programs in computers, control systems, communications, electronics, electromagnetics, and power. The department is headquartered in Blacksburg, Virginia, with additional research and instructional facilities in Arlington, Falls Church, and Hampton.
The Desktop Support Technician provides technical support to faculty, staff, and students using Windows, macOS, and Linux systems. Responsibilities include deploying and maintaining computer hardware, troubleshooting software and hardware issues, assisting with basic network connectivity, tracking and resolving support requests, maintaining technical documentation, and administering department software licenses. The position also works closely with senior IT staff to support infrastructure projects and the department’s broader technology needs.
Required Qualifications
-Associate’s degree in information technology, computer science, or equivalent experience
-Demonstrated experience providing desktop support in a professional environment
-Demonstrated knowledge of Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems
-Experience with hardware troubleshooting and repair
-Demonstrated experience with ticket management systems
-Experience with remote support tools and methodologies
-Experience supporting multiple software applications in an academic environment
-Experience demonstrating basic networking concepts and troubleshooting
Preferred Qualifications
-Bachelor’s degree in information technology or a related field, or equivalent experience
-Experience in an educational environment
-Strong documentation and communication skills
-Knowledge of Active Directory and Group Policy management
-Experience with mobile device management (MDM) solutions
-Experience with automated deployment tools
-Basic scripting knowledge (PowerShell, Bash)
-Familiarity with IT security best practices
