Job Description
Help expand innovative substance use prevention programming for Virginia’s youth. The Prevention Coordinator will work with Dr. Sam Margherio and Virginia Cooperative Extension on a Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority–funded project to bring school-based prevention strategies to communities across the state.
This part-time, during the school-year, position offers meaningful, flexible work for someone who enjoys connecting with people, supporting schools, and developing creative solutions. The Coordinator will:
-Partner with established Community Advisory Boards to adapt prevention programming for today’s youth and the needs of local communities.
-Update an online train-the-trainer toolkit that helps secondary educators use neuroscience education to support substance use prevention.
-Collaborate with Virginia Cooperative Extension Coordinators to share prevention strategies with partner schools across Virginia.
-Coordinate Brain Day field trips to the Virginia Tech campus, including communication with schools, scheduling, and event logistics.
This role is an excellent fit for someone seeking purposeful part-time work with a flexible schedule—for example, a professional, educator, caregiver, or community member looking for work during school hours. The position is especially well suited to someone who brings enthusiasm for engaging with community members, creativity and initiative, strong organizational skills, and an appreciation for working independently in a supportive, collaborative environment.
