Title: Campus Safety Supervisor

Position Purpose:

The Bates Campus Safety Supervisor serves in a position that is central to the professional development and training of Campus Safety Officers. This role provides leadership on shift and focuses on providing clear and structured feedback, guidance, mentorship and supervision to all Campus Safety Officers to ensure the continued safety of the Bates College community, and promoting the building of strong relationships both within the Campus Safety team and with faculty, staff, and students. 

Job Duties:

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise Officers through a risk management, accountability, and equity lens providing clear and consistent feedback and documenting moments of supervision and training.
  • Perform in-field supervision of Officers assigned to your shift by making frequent responses to calls for service with Officers.
  • Conduct performance reviews for all Officers on your shift at allotted time periods as directed by the Director of Campus Safety.
  • Promote the vision, direction, and management philosophy of the department holding relationship building, equity, accountability, risk management, and customer service as key values.
  • Foster & encourage positive, productive working relationships amongst officers in the department, with students, faculty & staff as well as outside related agencies (LPD, LFD, UAS).
  • Encourage and support Officers attending community engagement opportunities on campus.
  • Attend Security Management Team meetings with the Director of Campus Safety and other Supervisors.
  • Collaborate with the Management Team to create agendas & coordinate various officer training programs for monthly meetings.
  • Review & approve incident reports and Officer time-sheets.
  • Oversee new officer field training, mentoring & development to ensure new officers are reaching appropriate benchmarks and integrating into the department.
  • Frequently review, discuss, and evaluate Campus safety policy & propose changes to policy or training as needed.
  • Meet with Off-Campus student residents in conjunction with Lewiston Police Department regarding neighborhood issues/relations.
  • Approve all vacation request from Officers on shift.
  • Ensure there is appropriate officer coverage scheduled on shift & when there are vacancies in the schedule, ensure they are filled.
  • Oversee the administration of a departmental area such as accreditation, community engagement accountability & support, investigations, shift scheduling, etc. Community Engagement, Relationship Building, & Conflict Management Responsibilities.
  • Maintain a high level of visibility on campus to build relationships with students by conducting rounds when on duty and attending programs and other engagement opportunities.
  • Provide high-level, professional and courteous service through interactions with the Bates community via personal contact, telephone service and timely, competent, & empathetic radio dispatch services.
  • Incorporate the tenants of equity, inclusion, access, and educational justice in all areas of work.
  • Considering community health, equity, fairness, and de-escalation techniques - identify, intervene, and document campus conflicts/issues while completing rounds or when being dispatched by a Campus Safety team member.
  • Respond to incident and behavioral calls, including those that are highly complex in nature; e.g., sexual misconduct, alcohol and drug related behavior, mental health concerns, bias incidents, health & safety concerns, and community conflict.
  • Complete appropriate, accurate, and consistent documentation of policy violations and conflicts in accordance with departmental risk management practices.

Communications Responsibilities:

  • Approaches all communications and calls received with empathy, equity, and customer service while also obtaining the information needed professionally and efficiently.
  • Answers incoming calls on a multi-line switchboard, the Campus Safety business phone line, in person as well as the emergency elevator phone and takes the appropriate information and/or makes proper connections.
  • Maintains daily log of daily activities and initiates incident reports.
  • Dispatches all calls for service, with emergency calls taking precedence, using Campus Safety’s two-way radio system.
  • Monitors the E-access System for alarms.
  • Performs data entry of information relevant to the functioning of Campus Safety.
  • Registers computers, bicycles, etc. for crime prevention.
  • Responds to inquiries and furnishes information on campus activities, organizations, key personnel, administrative/academic offices and locations or transfers callers to offices which can provide information.
  • Completes and sends maintenance work order request forms.
  • Maintains various records books such as criminal trespass, no contact, parking permits, etc.

Campus Safety Response & Asset Management:

  • Responds to all routine and emergency calls for service (medical, fire alarms, and burglar alarms).
  • Provides campus safety escort and locks and unlocks buildings and offices as necessary.
  • Investigates incidents occurring on campus or in college owned property and completes detailed and accurate reports both verbally and in writing.
  • Conducts crime prevention, personal safety programs, and safety survey programs.
  • Works closely with Bates EMS and supports Bates EMS on medical calls Administration.
  • Maintains a thorough daily log of activities and assorted reports for each assigned shift.
  • Attends all departmental trainings and meetings.
  • Supports parking and traffic control policy and enforcement that includes ticketing and towing of vehicles as required.
  • Works with the Access Control Office of Campus Safety to issue the Bates Card to faculty, staff and students as needed. Maintain working knowledge of E-access system.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance, including working mandatory overtime as assigned.
  • Handles sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.
  • Maintains a pleasant and professional rapport with the City of Lewiston and other outside agencies.
  • Maintains all issued equipment in a clean and operable manner.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all relevant policies pertaining to safety and security.
  • Performs such other duties and tasks as required by the Director of Campus Safety.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Associate’s degree in criminal justice, education, community health, psychology, or related fields (or equivalent and relevant work experience).
  • Bachelor’s degree in student affairs, education, social work, counseling or related fields preferred.
  • Current valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.

Experience

  • 2 – 3 years of work experience that demonstrates commitment, dependability and maturity.
  • Equivalent work experience serving in residence life or that demonstrate a commitment and willingness to be part of a team and support students, also considered.

  • Willingness and ability to learn additional software as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to travel (by car, air, train or bus) domestically and internationally as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings & other non-traditional schedules.
