Overview
The Emergency Department (ED) of Mount Gambier and District Health Service (MGDHS) is located halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne in the heart of the picturesque Limestone Coast. MGDHS is the hub of the Limestone Coast Local Health Network with feeder hospitals in Naracoorte, Millicent, Kingston Southeast, and Bordertown as well GP sites at Robe and Penola, plus Edenhope and Casterton over the border in Victoria giving a local catchment population of over 75 000 people - and growing. With only 1-2 registrars on each shift there is plenty of opportunity to see high acuity patients with consultant support onsite 0800-2400 (and callback support overnight). The ED is staffed by a supportive consultant group, a pool of nurse practitioners/candidates and registered and enrolled nursing staff. MGDHS ED has provisional ACEM training accreditation (including paediatric logbook) backed by a diverse and eager group of consultants that are ready to support you through the next phase of your training. There are multiple opportunities for Training Stage 4 roles suiting a variety of trainee interests while simultaneously addressing local need, making for a rewarding experience - please contact the DEMT team (via lauren.kennedy@sa.gov.au) to discuss further. The department is also accredited for core emergency medicine training for RACGP and ACRRM, as well as ARST and AST (respectively) in emergency medicine.

Presentations are approaching 30,000 patients every year, with a significant proportion of children with local paediatric admitting services. It is backed by a comprehensive point of care laboratory and round-the-clock radiology services. The ED offers code blue support to the inpatient wards and outpatient services (dental clinic, dialysis unit, infusion suites, allied health and medical clinics). As an accredited emergency registrar, you will have the opportunity to handle a diverse range of medical emergencies and utilise various management techniques.

You can see our department in action in our recent video that forms the basis for a presentation at the upcoming inaugural ACEM Regional, Rural, Remote Conference in Darwin.
