Department Overview:

International Student Services recognizes international students as a vital part of UW–Madison. We are committed to educating and empowering students to make informed decisions and working with them to advocate for a globally inclusive community. We support this through four strategic areas: advising, compliance, operations, and global engagement. We advise on F and J visas by providing holistic support through advising on immigration, personal, and cultural matters. We are compliant with both federal and university policies for F-1 and J-1 students. Lastly, we contribute to the successful experience of all students, with an emphasis on international students studying at UW–Madison by providing services and programs to advance the internationalization of campus and community.

June 17th - June 24th(Flexible Start Date)

Position available for the academic year with the possibility of continued employment based on performance and office needs

Anticipated Hours Per Week:

12 - 20

Schedule:

15-20 hours per week preferred. A minimum of 12 hours/week. Schedule will be based on our open office times from 8:30am-4:00pm Monday-Friday. During peak academic time, hours per week can be flexible. Additional hours can be scheduled during vacation periods.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Note: This position is for graduate degree level students only.

• Advise international students on basic immigration guidance, academic success referrals, and provide resources for: academics, transition, health, safety, and well-being. We support students from the point of their admission to their post-graduation employment authorization.

• Assist ISS and IFSS staff with immigration services and manage the front desk of the International Services office. The front desk services includes: facilitating hybrid advising, responding to email/information requests, managing phone services, and managing document collection.

• Serve as a Terra Dotta SEVIS Assistant to review student immigration document updates and assign the update to an ISS staff for processing. (Terra Dotta is the online immigration portal for UW-Madison. SEVIS is the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System managed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security).

• Support office management and cleanliness. We are committed to creating safe, clean, and inclusive experiences in the International Community Center, Multifaith meditation space, lactation and family wellness room, front desk, beverage bar, and advising rooms.

• Support students while they are experiencing complex situations. Be compassionate and caring for students, and refer the complex cases and questions to ISS staff or specialized departments.

• Recommend and/or facilitate student engagement opportunities in collaboration with ISS staff. ISS student engagement supports social justice education, leadership development, and sustaining the Wisconsin Experience.

• Advance International Services and immigration management by working collaboratively with peers and ISS staff.

Physical Demands:

• Must be able to remain in a stationary position 80% of the time within the office
• Occasionally move boxes and office equipment weighing up to 20 lbs(~9kgs) for various office and event needs
