Department Overview:

Here at the Writing Center, our goal is to teach writers in all disciplines and at all levels to become more confident and more effective writers. Our main way of achieving this goal is through individual meetings, in which our experienced instructors help students develop and organize ideas for course papers, applications, personal statements, resumes, cover letters, theses, dissertations, and more. Our instructors provide a helpful audience for students by offering feedback for revisions. We also offer a series of non-credit workshops, weekly writing groups, writing mentorships, and an online Writer’s Handbook.

Schedule:

SCHEDULE
We work with your schedule to create a schedule for the whole semester. During the fall and spring semester, our standard open hours are Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. We are also open during the evenings on Monday through Thursday and Sunday at our satellite locations. We anticipate that all of our Instructors will have at least one evening satellite shift. Instructors’ shifts are typically 2-4 hours in length. The number of hours that you’ll work per week is dependent upon your contracted workload.

WORKLOAD
Here’s what some standard Writing Center workloads look like, based on percentage:

A 33.4% FTE Writing Center appointment:
171 hours: Instructional time
57 hours: Pre-reading of drafts & session recordkeeping time
12 hours: TA training and professional development

A 20% FTE Writing Center appointment:
99 hours: Instructional time
33 hours: Pre-reading of drafts & session recordkeeping time
12 hours: TA training and professional development

15 hours: Pre-reading of drafts & session recordkeeping time

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING
Writing Center TA training and professional development requirements are built directly into appointments, workloads, and pay and will include:

Scheduling session (online) - Wednesday, August 28, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Orientation (in person) - Monday, September 3, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Monthly full-staff meetings (in person) from 3:00-4:30 p.m. on Friday, September 13, Friday, October 11, and Friday, November 8.
9-week WC proseminar (for new Writing Center TAs who are teaching with the UW-Madison Writing Center for the first time) - days/times TBD (in person)

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

$2,650 - $13,253 per semester

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduate student status enrolled at UW-Madison
Experience responding to student writing or teaching writing
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Commitment to (or willingness to develop a commitment) accessible and socially just pedagogies

Well qualified applicants will have experience:
Providing one-to-one instruction at a writing center
Presenting information to large groups

Are committed to accessibility through the times, locations, and modalities we offer, including In-Person Instruction at the Main Center and at our evening Satellite Locations, Virtual Meetings (synchronous video sessions), and Written Feedback (asynchronous comments on downloadable drafts)

Are available to teach according to the Writing Center’s needs, including one or more evening shifts per week (campus partners generously fund several Writing Center TAships to provide writing assistance to undergrads in the evenings)

Will complete session reports in a timely manner, generally within 24 hours of the session

Over time, would be interested in serving on the Writing Center’s outreach team, teaching some Writing Center workshops, and/or contributing to Writing Center staff meetings or ongoing education offerings

Position Summary/Job Duties:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Writing Center Instructor, you would work collaboratively with undergraduate and graduate students from across the university to help them achieve their writing goals and provide them with appropriate writing instruction.
