Job Description

The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Virginia Tech seeks applications for a full-time, calendar or academic year, non-tenure-track Collegiate Faculty member who will serve as the Director of the Undergraduate Degree Program. The department has recently embarked on a major revision of its undergraduate program as part of a 5-year, $2M grant from the National Science Foundation’s Revolutionizing Engineering Departments (RED) program, This position has been created to coordinate strategy for the undergraduate program and sustain the vision of the RED effort beyond the duration of the grant.

This Collegiate Faculty position (non-tenure, renewable) will be at the rank associate or full professor. Collegiate Faculty mentor students, teach courses, support undergraduate or graduate research, and contribute to the overall development and assessment of academic programs. Collegiate Faculty are expected to participate in department, college and university service, committee work, to pursue a program of personal, funded research, including research into aspects of teaching and learning, and other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will lead a group responsible for the curriculum and assessment of the undergraduate program in coordination with ECE department leadership in support of the goals of the RED grant. Interaction with industry, national laboratories and government agencies is also required. Of particular interest is plans for assisting faculty with adopting project-based learning; conducting long-term, longitudinal evaluation of the grant’s impact on the department and student outcomes; and developing an articulation plan for community college students.  

Duties and responsibilities include: Student Recruitment, Teaching, and Mentorship (70%):  work with ECE faculty and staff and the Engineering Education Department to facilitate recruitment of freshman and transfer students; coordinate course offerings and scheduling for the ECE undergraduate program; lead curriculum development and assessment of the program; mentor students toward completion of their degree; assist ECE faculty with adopting project-based learning and other pedagogical improvements.  Research (20%):  maintain a program of personal funded research in an area related to electrical and computer engineering or engineering education.  Departmental, College, and University Service (10%):  participate in departmental, college, and university service, committee work, and perform other administrative duties.  

Required Qualifications

- A PhD in computer engineering, computer science, engineering education or a closely related field and previous teaching experience at the undergraduate level in ECE or a related field.

- Previous curriculum development and assessment experience.

- A strong record of academic accomplishments and a proven ability to work collaboratively.

- Experience with and commitment to interdisciplinary research and instruction and a willingness to cross disciplinary boundaries to address complex technical and societal challenges.

- Effective communication skills.  

Preferred Qualifications

- Previous academic administrative experience.

- Interest and experience in advising, mentoring, and working effectively with a diverse student population.

- Willingness and ability to work in a high-tech environment, such as online instruction and distance learning.

- Experience working in academic and collaborating with industry.
