The Department of Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) at Virginia Tech invites applications and nominations for two tenure-track faculty positions in bioprocess engineering at the assistant professor rank and the assistant and/or associate professor rank (9 months, teaching and research). The Department’s program in Bioprocess Engineering is dynamic and rapidly expanding, including faculty members who are conducting cutting edge research in biopharmaceuticals, renewable biofuels/biomaterials, metabolic engineering, agricultural and animal residue utilization, and synthetic biology. Now, the department is looking to expand the bioprocess engineering program into synthetic biology, agricultural biotechnology, and other closely related areas. The program’s research laboratories are located in a state-of-art, collaboration-friendly research building on the main campus. The BSE department is affiliated with two nationally ranked colleges: the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Engineering. We seek individuals interested in taking advantage of the excellent multidisciplinary research environment at Virginia Tech including opportunities in the Fralin Biotechnology Center, Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS), Translational Plant Sciences, VT Center for Drug Discovery, etc.
The successful candidates will have the ability to initiate, build, and sustain an externally funded research program that leverages the existing research strengths of the Bioprocess Engineering group in the department. The candidate will contribute to a strong academic experience for students, including teaching (and developing, as appropriate) undergraduate and graduate courses, providing undergraduate research opportunities, and advising graduate and post-graduate students. All areas related to Biomolecular Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, Metabolic Engineering, and Synthetic Biology will be considered but we are particularly interested in Agricultural Biotechnology such as systems biology for plants and animals, bioinformatics and analytics to plant and animal systems, gene editing of plants and animals, etc.
PhD from all science and engineering disciplines with suitable research and teaching interests with at least one prior degree in engineering.
Experience working in the biotech industry; experience in teaching undergraduate or graduate courses; demonstrable experience in applying for research grants or other funding for programmatic support; record of peer-reviewed publications; post-doctoral research experience.
