The Department of Entomology at Virginia Tech is accepting applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate. Research will focus on ecological and biogeochemical effects of introducing native unionid mussels into two restored urban headwater streams in Reston, Virginia - Snakeden Branch and The Glade. The incumbent will work with a team of experts for each of the key components of the stated research needs that will include a holistic and practical understanding of the outcomes of mussel restoration with respect to ecological processes, water quality, and biological communities. The primary responsibilities of the incumbent will be 1) coordinating research efforts across team members; 2) measuring and analyzing features of individual mussels, mussel beds, and stream reaches to describe the role mussels play in stream ecosystem function; 3) modeling mussel functions across mussel densities at different spatial and temporal scales. Duties will require frequent trips to Reston, VA for a day or overnight trips.
PhD in biology, ecology, ecohydrology, biogeochemistry, zoology, or related discipline, with emphasis on aquatic ecosystems earned no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year of eligibility remaining; Demonstrated scientific productivity, including peer-reviewed publications; Strong statistical modeling and analytical skills; Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Proficiency working with biogeochemical modeling; Working knowledge of geographic information systems; Experience mentoring students; and, Excellent writing and speaking skills.
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
