The incumbent will bring in, manage, and perform research projects that encompass optical metrology, which includes measuring surface form, roughness, reflectivity, and absorption, and will communicate these results. The incumbent will also support other CAO projects as appropriate and will lead the organization and operation of the HEL Metrology Workshop.

Duties / Responsibilities:

• Incumbent provides expert knowledge and hands-on experience in the testing of optical surfaces for form and roughness. This includes complex surfaces, such as off-axis aspheres.
• The incumbent will be setting up new facilities, providing new capabilities to the CAO. This includes the selection of hardware, lab layout and preparation, managing and assisting in setup, and then documenting the procedures for operating the equipment.
• The incumbent will communicate activities and results through reports, presentations, and publications.
• The incumbent will support other research activities within the Center for Applied Optics, including the development of proposals for funding.
• The incumbent will lead the organization and operation of a workshop for high-energy laser optics metrology at UAH.

• Ph.D. in Physics, Optical Science, or an engineering or science field with 10.5 years of full-time relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and years of experience.
• Extensive experience in optical metrology.
• Leadership knowledge and experience.
• U.S. Citizenship is required.

• Experience with research projects is desired.
• Prior experience and familiarity with optical metrology is desired.
