The Ben Avery Shooting Facility is one of the largest publicly operated shooting facilities in the country. Our world-class shooting range is a City of Phoenix Point of Pride and has received a Five-Star rating from the National Association of Shooting Ranges. Located on 1,650 acres in north Phoenix, the Ben Avery Shooting Facility averages more than 240,000 shooters per year. The facility offers a fun and safe environment for shooters of all experience levels and strives to provide a quality recreation experience for all users.
The Clay Target Center is currently seeking to fill a part-time Shooting Range Assistant position. The schedule will include working a rotating shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays, outside in a noisy environment while exposed to heat, cold, wind, rain, and/or dust.
Under close supervision, the Shooting Range Assistant will perform entry-level tasks associated with range safety enforcement, which include firearms safety, keeping clay target machines loaded, and enforcing safety regulations on trap and skeet ranges, and sporting clays courses, while performing superior customer service.
- Observes public shooting and ensures a safe and family-friendly range experience for all customers.
- Performs daily maintenance tasks to include loading targets into trap & skeet houses and clay target machines, raking and cleaning various fields, emptying trash, and assisting in the care of the landscape and other facility maintenance / custodial duties, along with providing customer service and safety.
- Assists range staff in set-up, implementation, and completion of corporate events, introductory shooting programs, shooting competitions, and other shooting sports activities throughout the season, in addition to performing basic maintenance and upkeep of the facility.
The candidate must have exceptional customer service and communication skills and have the ability to interact and work with a diverse variety of customers, user groups, and employees. The candidate must have a safety mindset and be prepared to enforce range safety rules equally at all times.
The ideal candidate will have customer service experience in a high-volume, high-stress environment. Will also have experience with clay targets and/or shotgun shooting. Certifications from nationally recognized shooting sports organizations are a plus.
A level 1 fingerprint clearance card is required.
Must be able to legally possess a firearm in accordance with 18 U.S. Code § 922(g).
Employment is contingent upon completion of a post-offer medical/physical examination and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions. Medical/Physical examination will include baseline blood lead and zinc levels and a baseline hearing test, all of which will be monitored on an annual basis.
If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
