As a shop technician, you will guide students, faculty, and staff in their use of the shop's tools as well as its techniques and best practices. You will manage the shop's inventory using WebCheckout, ensure supplies are available for student projects, and help troubleshoot technical issues to enhance the learning environment. You will maintain the safety, functionality, and cleanliness of the shop equipment; provide outstanding customer service and help SCAD students from all academic departments meet their goals with shop resources; and anticipate and enforce all shop policies, procedures, and safety measures. You will also assist faculty with class demonstrations and equipment setup and help students with basic fabrication issues and the correct operation of shop equipment.

In this position, you will help the shop manager with basic training and the onboarding of new staff to proactively prevent potential safety issues. You will assist with the loading, unloading, and processing of delivered materials and equipment; provide required data to the shop manager, including up-to-date inventories, late return fines, and headcount data; and identify and develop solutions to improve shop functionality and efficiencies. You will attend all shop meetings and university-sponsored safety and security training sessions and provide backup operations support during times of high demand. Among other duties, you will also report all concerns and repair needs for the shop equipment, perform light-duty maintenance and thorough cleaning of the shop equipment and spaces, and be prepared to render first aid for minor incidents.

The shop technician also participates in special projects, and events as needed, including collaborations with the SCAD School of Film and Acting production team to support practicum and work-study students as they implement design elements and stagecraft for all productions.

The successful candidate possesses strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic academic environment. Detail-oriented and highly observant, the candidate excels with organization, critical thinking, time management, and problem solving. The ability to troubleshoot technical issues, guide tool usage and techniques, and adapt to changing needs or challenges is paramount, as is proficiency with the operation and maintenance of industrial woodworking equipment, processes, and methods, (e.g., table saws, bandsaws, drill presses, miter saws, and sanders). A commitment to workplace safety protocols and standards is also vital.

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • High school diploma and experience in scenic carpentry, set construction, film, and performing arts
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and a commitment to promoting a safe working environment for students and staff members
  • Strong work ethic and high standards in quality of work

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in production design or technology
  • Experience in welding, scenic carpentry, set construction, film, and performing arts, especially in an academic environment

Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
