As a CNC generalist machinist, you will support students and faculty on projects related to academic departments and university infrastructure. You will ensure that the machinery is properly set up and in good working order to execute quality three- and five-axis projects via Mastercam. Responsibilities include the management of machine speed, material feed, and path cut adjustments, as well as the design and fabrication of parts for special projects, renovations/construction, and displays. You will communicate with students about the procedures and information necessary for CNC use, edit and modify files as needed for the program, and measure finished dimensions to verify they conform to the provided specifications via precision instruments, templates, and fixtures.
In this role, you will review program specifications to determine and set machine operations and sequencing, finished work piece dimensions, and numerical control sequences. Collaboration with the CNC operations coordinator and shop staff will be necessary to complete projects. Additionally, as a generalist machinist, you will request maintenance and equipment repairs, explaining identified program errors. Among other duties, you will ensure the safe and efficient operation of the lab through compliance with all OSHA and SCAD safety policies and procedures.
The ideal candidate demonstrates a detail-oriented work ethic and an ability to multitask in a deadline-driven environment. They are also able to work overtime and maintain a flexible schedule.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Proficient in 3D modeling
- Experience with CNC, Rhinoceros, SolidWorks, Mastercam, or similar software
- Familiar with the SCAD School of Design's studio equipment, techniques, and safety procedures
- Knowledge of wood, wood processes, and woodworking machinery
- Ability to work overtime and/or maintain a flexible schedule
Certificates, licenses, and registrations:
- Valid driver’s license
- Acceptance as a SCAD authorized driver
Travel required:
Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
