Job Summary/Basic Functions
Eastern Kentucky University's College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics invites candidates to apply for the position of Professional Academic Advisor for the Richmond, KY campus.
This full-time staff position within the office of the Associate Dean is critical to the College of STEM to provide essential support to first-year students majoring in (but not limited to) Biology, Biomedical Sciences, and Wildlife Management. The advisor is responsible for creating course schedules for all incoming freshmen in these majors and meeting with students during summer orientation to ensure accurate placement and early engagement.
In addition, the advisor regularly reviews academic performance data and implements targeted interventions to address student challenges. A large proportion of students in these programs pursue pre-professional tracks (including pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-veterinary, and pre-physician assistant), requiring specialized guidance in prerequisite sequencing, graduate/professional school preparation, and co-curricular involvement to enhance competitiveness for advanced study. The position also plays a key role in graduation clearance.
The successful candidate will work closely with other advisors to assist and track curricular processes and changes across multitudes of programs and disciplines. They will utilize university platform resources such as DegreeWorks, Advising 360, Banner, and Slate to process information and keep timely and accurate records. Interaction with students through meetings, phone or email is a vital component of their responsibilities.
Applicants should hold a minimum of an earned Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution at the time of appointment; Master’s preferred. One or more years of experience working with students in an advisory capacity is required.
