Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Aviation is seeking a Chief Engineer to provide leadership, supervision, and guidance to the Airport Services Division engineering team. The Chief Engineer coordinates the engineering team’s work and provides detailed engineering guidance and assistance to airports in the Commonwealth to ensure project compliance with FAA, state and local laws, regulations and policies. This individual oversees the management of capital improvement and special fund projects and is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the airport licensing program’s rules and regulations in accordance with Code of Virginia §5.1.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of and extensive experience in engineering, surveying practices and contract administration. Extensive experience with construction methods and skilled in project management. Demonstrated skills and abilities in engineering. Understand and interpret state and federal rules and regulations. Knowledge of state airport licensing rules and regulations. Knowledge and experience of current general aviation safety and security practices and procedures. Proficiency with administrative application software packages and grant management applications. Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with internal and external project team members. Extensive experience in the engineering field with the Department of Aviation, another agency, or engineering/construction firm. AutoCAD experience. Project management experience required. Demonstrated experience using field survey equipment. Demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in using personal computer applications.

Additional Considerations

BS in civil engineering or combined education, training, and experience.
