Purpose of Position
The College of Engineering and Mines at the University of North Dakota (UND) invites applications for a Teaching Assistant/Associate Professor position in the Harold Hamm School of Geology and Geological Engineering, beginning in the fall semester (16 August 2025). Salary is commensurate with experience and rank will be determined upon qualifications. We are seeking an established geological engineering teacher to fill a non-tenured, 9-month faculty position focusing on a broad range of geological and geological engineering topics. The position requires a PhD at the time of employment, and candidates are preferred to have 5 years of prior teaching experience at the university or college level. The position would benefit from experience in teaching classes in geological engineering, environmental geosciences, and geology, with preferred experience in geological engineering and geomechanics. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in teaching “Engineering Geology”, “Geomechanics”, and “Soil Mechanics” to undergraduate students, as those three courses will form part of the teaching program for this position. The successful applicant is expected to teach both in-person as well as online courses, and develop courses for online degrees in geology and geological engineering; he/she is expected to teach entry-level courses for Geology and Geological Engineering majors.
Duties & Responsibilities
Teaching undergraduate-level courses in various sub-disciplines of geological engineering and geology; driving curriculum changes that attract new students and grow enrollment. This includes the development of new online and on-campus courses that use high-impact practices to ensure students are prepared for a variety of future careers; collaborating with other units in the College of Engineering and Mines, across campus, and other academic institutions across the US and worldwide; participating in school, college, university, and professional service activities, as appropriate.
Required Competencies
- Experience or demonstrated ability working with diverse groups and students, including mentoring undergraduates in research.
Minimum Requirements
- Ph.D. in Geology, Geological Engineering, Environmental Geosciences, or a closely related field
- Some teaching and research experience in geological engineering, geology, and/or environmental geology.
- Expertise and a publication record in Geological Engineering, Geology, or Environmental Geosciences.
Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
- Prior knowledge of, or familiarity with, geological engineering topics such as geomechanics and soil mechanics, or similar topics.
- Five or more years of prior experience teaching at a college or university level.
- Experience in collaborating with other departments and entities outside the main field of study, especially in engineering or engineering-related fields.
- Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in teaching “Engineering Geology”, “Geomechanics”, and “Soil Mechanics” to undergraduate students
- Prior success at research, such as publications, patents, and/or external funding awards
