Purpose of Position
The purpose of the Assistant Coach - Men's Hockey position is to assist the Head Men’s Ice Hockey Coach with all aspects of a Division I program. This position provides comprehensive assistance to the Athletics Department in the area of providing instruction to the men's hockey team. This position will provide instruction to the team that includes, but not limited to, teaching proper skills and techniques, teaching basic physical health concepts to include nutritional education, and teaching team & individual leadership concepts/skills as well as providing general safety instruction. Must provide support & encouragement, and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes. Must have a commitment to compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide instruction specific to the men's hockey team
- Design instructional/training in-season/off-season specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
- Teach basic physical health concepts (to include nutritional education) specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
- Provide instruction related to team and leadership concepts/skills specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
- Provide general safety instruction for all activities in which the team and/or individuals participate. Specifically instruct student athletes on safe training and exercise techniques.
- Provide support and encouragement to promote the mental well-being of the student-athletes.
- Serve as a role model and demonstrate a professional working relationship with student-athletes.
- Assist/run practices under the direction of the Head Coach.
- Assist strength coach for weight lifting and conditioning practices, as needed.
- Provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety of the student-athletes.
- Assisting with all facets of coaching at all UND games and practices.
- Follow all NCAA, conference, UND rules and regulations.
- Other coaching duties as assigned by Head Coach.
- Recruit and evaluate prospective student athletes, team travel and scouting
- Recruit quality prospective student-athletes
- Handle day-to-day correspondence, both email and print mail, as assigned.
- Handle weekly communications to prospective student-athletes, as assigned.
- Coordinate official and unofficial campus visits, as assigned.
- Handle documentation for each prospective student athlete in accordance with NCAA and UND Athletics Department compliance protocols/rules.
- Follow all NCAA, conference, UND recruiting rules and regulations.
- Assist with scouting and/or team travel, as assigned.
- Assist with statistics at all UND games and practices, as requested.
- Other recruiting duties, as assigned by Head Coach.
- Fundraising, social media and public relations
- Assist with maintaining contact with alumni and boosters, as assigned.
- Serve as a role model and demonstrate a professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administration, alumni, and general public.
- Develop community support for the program and participate in Athletics department and fundraising activities, as assigned.
- Assist with social media for the men's ice hockey program, when applicable.
- Other fundraising and/or community engagement duties, as assigned by Head Coach.
Required Competencies
- Must have an effective professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administration, alumni, and general public.
- Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and have strong organizational skills.
- Ability to develop a competitive NCAA Division I program.
- Must have commitment to NCAA compliance and follow all NCAA, conference and UND rules and regulations.
- Must have commitment to academic success of student-athletes.
- Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes including having a valid driver’s license.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 5 years of experience from the following combination: NCAA Division I collegiate coaching, juniors coaching/administration or professional playing experience.
- 2 years of hockey recruiting experience.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Successful completion of a criminal history background check (CHBC).

Preferred Qualifications
- 3 years of experience managing a hockey roster at the collegiate or juniors level.
- Coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level.
- Experience with NCAA Division I rules and regulations.
- Supervisory experience.
- University of North Dakota ties by either having attended or through employment.
- North Dakota ties by having lived or born in the state.
