Purpose of Position
This purpose of the Associate Head Coach - Men's Hockey position is to assist the Head Men’s Hockey Coach with all aspects of the Division I hockey program at the University of North Dakota. This position provides assistance to the Athletics Department in the area of providing comprehensive instruction to the men’s hockey team. The instruction provided to the team includes, but is not limited to, teaching proper skills and techniques, teaching basic physical health concepts to include nutritional education, teaching team and individual leadership concepts/skills & providing general safety instruction. Must have a commitment to compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations. Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide instruction specific to the men's hockey team
- Design instructional/training in-season/off-season specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
- Teach basic physical health concepts (to include nutritional education) specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
- Provide instruction related to team and leadership concepts/skills specific to assigned player groups and individuals.
- Provide general safety instruction for all activities in which the team and/or individuals participate. Specifically instruct student athletes on safe training and exercise techniques.
- Provide support and encouragement to promote the mental well-being of the student- athletes.
- Serve as a role model and demonstrate a professional working relationship with student-athletes.
- Assist/run practices under the direction of the Head Coach.
- Serve as the Head Coach of the program in the event of their absence.
- Assist strength coach for weightlifting and conditioning practices, as needed.
- Provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety of the student-athletes.
- Assist with all facets of coaching at all UND games and practices.
- Follow all NCAA, conference, UND rules and regulations.
- Recruit & evaluate prospective student-athletes, team travel & scouting
- Recruit quality prospective student-athletes for the sport program.
- Handle day-to-day correspondence & communication across all forums, as assigned.
- Handle all weekly telephone calls.
- Coordinate official and unofficial campus visits, as assigned.
- Handle documentation for each prospective student-athlete in accordance with NCAA and UND Athletics Department compliance protocols/rules.
- Follow all NCAA, conference, UND rules and regulations.
- Assist with team travel and/or scouting as assigned.
- Assist with statistics at all UND games and practices.
- Social media, public relations, fundraising, etc.
- Assist with social media for men’s hockey program, when applicable.
- Develop community support for the program and participate in Athletics department and fundraising activities, as assigned.
- Serve as a role model and demonstrate a professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administration, alumni, and general public.
- Assist with maintaining contact with men’s hockey alumni and boosters, as assigned.
Required Competencies
- Must have effective professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administration, alumni, and general public.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and computer skills.
- Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize.
- Ability to teach and work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Must have commitment to NCAA compliance and follow all NCAA, conference and UND rules and regulations.
- Must have commitment to academic success of student-athletes.
- Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student athletes including having a valid driver’s license.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 7 seasons of a combination of collegiate/juniors hockey coaching experience or professional hockey playing experience.
- Experience recruiting players and/or student-athletes for hockey teams.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Successful completion of a criminal history background check (CHBC).

Preferred Qualifications
- 5 seasons of coaching experience.
- Head coaching experience at the collegiate or juniors level.
- Coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level.
- Experience with NCAA Division I rules and regulations.
- Supervisory experience.
- University of North Dakota ties by either having attended or through employment.
- North Dakota ties by having lived or being born in the state.
