Purpose of Position

Provide educational and career planning services to students in grades 6 through 12 in classroom and small group settings. Advise and instruct participants in developing strategies for classroom success, exploring options for future career and educational opportunities, assist in the completion of college admissions forms and federal financial aid applications, taking students on college tours, conducting career exploration using standardized assessments, take participants on college tours, and advising related to transition issues. This position is located in Bismarck and serves students in the Fort Yates, Solen, and Standing Rock schools. Regular travel to Grand Forks is required. This is a 10-month position which runs annually from August 1 to May 31. Option to start before August 1 in the first year is available.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • 10% - Identify and selecting 300 (or number as indicated by Director) qualified participants from a minimum of three target schools and provide assistance in completing grades 6 through 12. 
  • 5% - Coordination of agency and community resources in conjunction with career and academic counseling and referrals when appropriate to human/social service agencies 
  • 55% - Act as a liaison and information source to further participant knowledge concerning secondary and post-secondary expectations and procedures. Provide academic, career, personal, and financial group/individual/peer counseling to participants and for organizing mentoring activities at appropriate levels. Provide parental workshops on appropriate topics. 
  • 15% - Identify, select, and serve a group of 15 students in grades 6-8 from a minimum of one target school to receive more intensive services in all areas. 
  • 15% - Maintain accurate student and program records. Responsible for participating in opportunities for staff evaluation, growth, and development.

Required Competencies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement workshops in the areas of career exploration, financial aid, and areas enhancing academic success.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others as part of a team and independently to accomplish goals and objectives.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Work, Counseling, or related field.
  • Experience in teaching/counseling in group and/or classroom presentations.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate motor vehicles provided through state motor pool.
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Education, Social Work, Counseling, or related field.
  • Experience in teaching/counseling Talent Search related topics in group and/or classroom presentations, grades 6-12.
  • Experience with North Dakota secondary education graduation requirements.
  • Experience networking with public school personnel.
  • Experience with TRIO Programs.
  • Background/experience with low-income, first generation college populations.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, particularly American Indian communities.
