Purpose of Position
Reporting to the Director of Safety with a dotted line to the Deans of Arts & Sciences and Engineering and Mines, this position is responsible for the management of environmental health and safety related programs; participating in committees and working groups; assisting in the development, oversight, training, and continuous improvement of the University Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the Safety Program for the University Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments, including updating and reviewing of the safety manuals.
- Conduct studies to identify hazards (i.e., air quality. etc.)
- Develop incident prevention and loss control systems for incorporation into the operational policies of Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments.
- Devise methods to evaluate safety programs and conduct evaluations, as well as compile statistical information to determine safety and environmental health priorities for Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments.
- Evaluate technical and scientific publications concerned with safety management.
- Provide safety consultation to the Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments.
- Conduct inspections and audits to monitor regulatory compliance Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments.
- Identify, eliminate, or manage hazards as required by federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines.
- Investigate incidents (fires. spills, etc.), prepare reports and assist with ND Workers Compensation claims management as it pertains to Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments.
- Safety and Loss Control related committee membership(s) and any other committees as assigned.
- Foster and improve upon the safety culture within the two colleges.
- Works with colleges to develop field safety guidelines and training.
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the Environmental Program at the Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments, including updating and reviewing of the safety manuals.
- Maintain bill of ladens, shipping documents and managing Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments waste stream programs.
- Annual Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) facility reviews and Tier 2 reporting for the Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments.
- Perform respiratory fit tests for personnel who are required to wear a tight-fitting respirator within the Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments.
- Conduct annual certification on fume hoods within the Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments.
- Work with federal, state, and local agencies to facilitate the correction of safety and environmental health problems within the Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments.
- Management of regulated/ hazardous materials and wastes policies and programs within the Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments.
- Chemical Hygiene Officer for the Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments.
- Serves as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments
- Oversee compliance with the Chemical Hygiene program
- Manages purchasing and inventory of Chemicals within the Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments
- Perform routine inspections and surveys of authorized users
- Coordinates calibration of all survey monitoring equipment
- Manages the waste program, radiation sealed sources and radiation producing machines for the Arts & Sciences and Engineering Departments
- Provide training on various Environmental Health and Safety topics .
- Determines training needs based on regulatory requirements and analysis of incident statistics
- Develops safety training curriculum and methods to better inform employees of occupational hazards from conducted job hazard analysis of their work areas
- Conducts safety training on various topics (laboratory safety. general safety. etc.)
- Keeps current with the changing methods and technologies.

Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree’ a directly related field
- 5 years’ related experience in safety, or closely related field.
- Experience working in a laboratory environment.
- Experience working with hazardous materials
- Professional experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Industrial Hygienist or qualified to take the exam
- Certified Safety Professional or qualified to take the exam
- Master Safety Professional or qualified to take the exam
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager or qualified to take the exam
