Purpose of Position

The Facility/Animal Lab Manager requires the candidate to be highly motivated and work independently in a fast-paced work environment, comfortable interacting daily with external and internal customers, and adjusting to his/her evolving responsibilities. The Facility/Animal Lab Manager oversees the animal lab technicians who provide care for research animals ensuring the care is meeting all appropriate protocols and standard operating procedures. The manager is responsible for inventory management, training animal lab technicians, keep all stakeholders informed of status and changes at the facilities, Collaborate with client’s Safety Officers, Attending Veterinarian, IACUC Chair, and CBR Leadership to implement the safety and IACUC policies.

This position requires the candidate to be highly motivated and work independently in a fast-paced work environment, comfortable interacting daily with external and internal stakeholders, and adjusting to their evolving responsibilities. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. This position ensures proper facility operation and secures the area at shift end. Animals must be properly cared for 365 days per year; therefore, this position sometimes requires the individual to work during weekends, emergencies, and closures.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Facility Management
  • Oversee the ordering and inventory management of facility materials (caging, bedding, food, janitorial supplies at respective vivaria).
  • Order animals as needed.
  • Oversee daily censuses for all assigned vivaria.
  • Performs effective facility management of 4 animal facilities (CBR, CBR2, BRCF, Starcher Hall) to include local, state and federal inspections, supply management, waste disposal, facility maintenance, and safety,
  • Manage animal transport between facilities.
  • Appointed as Building Safety and Security Representative (BSSR) for all CBR Facilities.
  • Responsible for facility access and keys
  • Facilitate Maintenance Oversight 
    • Schedule required maintenance
    • Order required supplies and parts to keep equipment properly maintained
    • Maintain equipment maintenance logs
    • Oversee contractors providing equipment maintenance.
    • Communicate with VPR Leadership on anticipated costs, equipment life, future facility needs, etc.
  • Ensure that a clean and safe environment is maintained in the Vivarium.
  • Establish and maintain the facility staff work assignment schedules.
  • Assists in coordinating sentinel health monitoring program. Order, receive and set up animals in sentinel cages. Monitor and collect samples to be sent in for testing.
  • Complete animal care tasks as needed to ensure adequate coverage
• Manage Animal care staff
• Hire animal care technicians, students, and temp employees.
• Oversee day-to-day execution of job duties at all assigned vivaria.
• Plan for staff scheduling and routine husbandry coverage for overtime, weekend, and holidays.
• Train technicians on CBR SOPs and ensure animal technicians follow procedures.
• Perform coaching and counseling to trouble-shoot personnel issues, and perform yearly performance reviews
• Develop and update processes, procedures, and protocols.
• Oversee and ensures compliance with protocols related to caring for animals that are treated with hazardous or bio-hazardous materials
• Maintain Facility Documentation
  • Review and maintain facility records (per diem forms, cage cards, applicable testing records, facility walk-through record, inspection records, etc.).
  • Maintain equipment and maintenance records.
  • Track, trend, and evaluate animal rates including incoming animals, mortalities, and animals euthanized. 
• Stakeholder Communication
  • Assists attending veterinarian with quality control of health status on incoming animals and ensure animal husbandry is properly maintained.
  • Collaborate with UND Safety Officers and IACUC Chair to implement the safety and IACUC policies in vivaria.
  • Notify stakeholders of any animal welfare concerns.
  • Keep the Division of Research abreast of vivarium operations and client feedback. 
  • Monitor principal investigator research protocols for consistency and compliance with IACUC approved protocols.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, another science, or a related field.
• Two years managing or leading vivarium staff
• Four years of experience with rodent research animal species (mice, rats) handling and their appropriate use.
• Experience working with supplies and equipment used in animal research facilities.
• Two years’ experience with the understanding of animal welfare and the importance of ethical use of animals in research.
• One-year supervisory experience in providing feedback, coaching, leadership
• Experience with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (The Guide) and IACUC-approved research protocols
• Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

• 3 years supervisory experience in an animal care facility
