Purpose of Position
The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS) at the University of North Dakota invites applications for a nine-month Teaching Assistant Professor in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The successful candidate will teach core undergraduate and graduate courses—including Machine Learning, Data Visualization, Data Mining, Applied Deep Learning, and Reinforcement Learning—implement high-impact instructional practices, and help launch the School’s new Ph.D. program in Artificial Intelligence.
The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is housed in the College of Engineering and Mines and currently offers BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, and Cyber Security; PhD degrees are offered in Electrical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Computer Science
This position aligns with UND’s strategic focus on emerging technologies. The successful candidate will ensure continuity in core Data Science and AI offerings, enhance student retention via active learning, and contribute to the Ph.D. in AI program.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Teach approximately 4/4 course load in areas including but not limited to data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
- Develop new graduate AI courses required for the Ph.D. program.
- Implement high‑impact teaching practices to improve recruitment and retention.
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in projects and research.
- Participate in departmental service, assessment, and outreach.
- Roughly 10 % effort may be allocated to Data Science and/or applied AI research.

Minimum Requirements
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field.
- Experience teaching data‑science and/or AI‑related courses.
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses.
- Industry experience in applied machine learning or artificial intelligence.
- Record of course development.
- Peer‑reviewed publications or externally funded projects in Data Science, AI/ML.
- Experience mentoring students and supervising student research projects/independent studies
